looking for a new helmet

Postby wireguy51 » Fri May 19, 2017 12:26 pm

Right now I use a 3/4 Gmax helmet. I am considering going to a modular helmet mainly for better safety and also less wind noise. Any suggestions on brands? Not looking to break the bank on this. $150-$250 range

I would encourage you to consider a full face--offers more protection! I prefer the Arai but you have to find the helmet that best fits your head. Different manufacturers build their helmets for different style heads and it is very important to find one that is comfortable so you can wear it all day!

Harvey, I have tried full face and so far have been unable to find a good fit. I do realize I am sacrificing some safety. I do like the idea of the modular as it allows some flexibility as far as being able to grab a quick drink and talking with out removing the entire helmet. The search continues. Thanks for your input.

I've got an HJC Modular in that price range that has served me well.
It's not the lightest thing out there, mind you! LOL :)

I'm a big fan of modular helmets as well. I used to love Arai helmets & used to buy them religiously, but their prices have since gone up astronomically, and far outstripped my ability to pay. Locally, Arai helmets run $1500-$2500. Uh...sorry - that's not gonna happen on my budget!!

There are a LOT of decent helmets out there in your price range. I bought my latest modular ones (matching Vega Summit 3.1 lids, for my wife & I) online, and was absolutely happy with the purchase. It appears they're still available, and they run around $130USD each. We both find them comfortable & secure, with no pressure points.

That said, there are lots of brands & models of modular helmets out there. Personally, I'd stick to sellers that specialize in motorcycle gear, as they're most likely to help you get exactly the right size. Do email them, and discuss fitment with them - most places want you to get what you want, the first time.

For that price range you might look at some of the Scorpion helmets. They have many features usually found on more expensive brands.

I'm happy with my Scorpion helmet, no fogging issues, drop-down sunshades, adjustable vents, comfortable fit, and quiet. (Although, not modular) I think it was about $250 at the Honda dealership.

This is always a real issue when shopping for helmets. I don't think I have ever found one in a shop and said, "this is the one". When new, they are so tight and you wonder if you will ever get the thing over your head, and if so, will it come off again? You feel that you are eating your cheeks and start to think if you will ever find one that fits.

It usually takes me about 6 months of wear to find out whether I have made the right choice.

Your point about the correct size feeling tight is well taken. My present helmet felt just right when I bought it. Now it feels sloppy.
Thanks, Al

My modular is an off brand( Zeus) that I bought on a closeout when the local Victory dealer was closing up shop. The fit is excellent and the windnoise is only slightly more than my Shoei fullface-which is great. It's getting harder to find places that stock a variety of helmets to actually try on.

I bought HJC IS-MAX II modular. It's my first helmet, but I absolutely LOVE it. Modular, which does make grabbing a quick drink of water or talking easier. It has excellent ventilation, it comes with the pinlock antifog lens, a drop down tinted visor, the helmet is super light AND there is hardly any wind noise at all, even on the highway. It's an amazing helmet and I will buy more of the same. 100% recommend this helmet. It cost me $300 CN before taxes.
