DO NOT PURCHASE METZLER TIRES !

Post by Winger76 » Mon Jun 19, 2017 7:21 pm

Fellow Wingers,

I have posted about this problem before and just wanted to let everyone know.
Please, I beg of you, DO NOT PURCHASE MEZTLER TIRES !
They are a total POS.
Please see attached pics.
This specific tire is a Marathon 880 and only had about 2500 miles on it.
Not only are they junk, you are putting your life or a passengers in danger along with fellow riders around you.
Luckily I was only one up.
This is the third tire I have put on my 96 GL1500 SE in four years and the same issue has produced the same results of splitting and de-laminating
Isn't that the definition of insanity ?
There is nothing more unnerving than tooling down the highway at 70 mph and hearing THWAP...THAWP...THWAP....

I've used Metzlers for a number of years - put some long miles on them, never had that problem.

Two front tyres on cx500 and one on my GL1500 that is due to be replaced - glad you didn't harm yourself.

What type of roads are you travelling on and the pressure in the tyres ??

There was a three-page article in Wing World from Bruce Johnson about his run in with the Metzler ME 880 bias ply tires on his GL1500. It is an excellent article including pictures of the failed rear tire. This is in the September 2008 Issue of Wing World magazine, pages 56 through 58 and it is available here online at http://wingworldmag.com/wing_issue/september-2008/. The title of the article is Rescued in Iowa: Everything that is right about GWRRA.
Here is a picture of his tire from the magazine:
A few months prior to this article appearing in the Wing World magazine, one of our friends in our GWRRA chapter experienced an identical failure on the rear Metzler ME 880 of his ‘90 GL1500. At that time he thought it was a fluke and had a new set of ME880's mounted on his '90 GL1500. I don't recall if it was a warranty replacement or not.
Since reading this article and then having the same problem with his son’s ME880’s, he has now removed the ME880’s from his GL1500. His son had a '87 GL1200 Aspencade and he too experienced the separation and loss of tread in two different places on the rear tire of his Metzler ME880.

A call was made to Metzler in an attempt to see if they were aware of the problem and/or make them aware there is a continuing problem. The individual at Metzler who answered the call only said that if he had a problem to report it to the NHTSA if he felt like it and gave him the number to call. So, he did and left a message. A Mr. Mark Swanson, Safety Defense Investigator with the National Highway Safety Administration, returned his call. Pictures of the failed tires have been sent to Mr. Swanson along. Also, Mr. Swanson had sent a prepaid return shipping authorization for the tire carcass. This most recent defective tire was shipped to them. We never heard anymore about it. He said that if anyone else had issues with these tires that he wanted to hear about it. His email is mark.swanson@dot.gov . His phone number is 202-366-7020.

No one we know in our riding circle will ever buy or use a Metzler ME880 again.

I'm not defending Metzler - but the article you mention was 2008 - maybe things have changed since then?

You are most probably correct but no one I know trusts their butt to an ME800. There are really too many choices out there to pick a tire that let you down not once but twice.

not trying to beat up Metzler but I had a rear tire failure just like that a few years back on an almost new tire, it happened the day after returning from a trip 2 up pulling our camper, it was in Jan. so heat wasn't a factor and I keep on top of my tires so pressure was not a factor
you couldn't give me a Metzler free to put on the wing
my son has the Metzlers on his Shadow and has not seen any issues, I think the Wings are just too heavy for them regardless of what they say their rated for

I had 3 ME880s do the same on my GL1100A and a friend with another 83 Aspencade also had 3 do the same, all on the rear tires. Metzler was made aware of all 6 tires. They paid for 2 of mine, one of my friends.
I refuse to buy another tire from them.

From what I understand, Metzler make/made Goldwing specific ME880's, the front is ME880GL, the rear is ME880G.
Occasionally I have used Metzler since the 70's, and never had a problem, I have a 880 on the front of Big Blue that is almost at the end of its life. Is your 880 a GoldWing 880, if not, then the fitter should fit a GoldWing 880 free of charge. Because you have had three with the same problem, I can only assume you have 880 H that is for the VTX1800.

I only mention this because no one else has mentioned ME880 GoldWing specific.

Big Blue KY has a wonderful insight to this problem. You, the rider has to make sure the dealer tech does install the correct tire for your bike. The websites of the various manufacturers list this type of info and the consumer needs to make sure you are buying the correct item. I trust a dealer tech as far as I can throw him.

Also there is no mention of the manufacture date of the failed tires. Were they more than 4 years old at the time of failure. Again it is the consumers responsibility to insure that an installed tire is as new as possible. My personal limit is for its date of manufacture to be no more that 12 months prior and I really don't want that tire. A dealer will try to see what he has in stock rather than order a new one. Plus he can get the job done today rather than you having to wait 2-3 days for the new tire to be shipped in--Be careful.

5 of the 6 I mentioned were 2 year or less tires
