Downshifting to first gear while moving

Post by gildco » Sun Oct 01, 2017 5:28 pm

A respected Gold Wing mechanic has written that he never shifts into first gear until the bike has completely stopped because doing so is easier on the transmission (Gold Wing ). Sometimes I downshift before coming to a complete stop, and don't experience any clinking. What are the opinions out there among you Gold Wing owners?

I generally downshift to second gear as I am slowing, but will apply pressure to the shifter when I get down to between 5-10 mph. When the transmission is happy, it will click into first, and I will then put my left foot down as I brake to a complete stop, leaving it in first as I am stopped.

So far, I have almost nothing but bad feelings when I shift into first gear while moving. It is usually unintentional due to me forgetting that I only have 5 gears now because my last bike had 6. That and I'm still getting used to and determining exactly what gear to be in for various speeds below highway speeds on an 1800 Wing. When I intentionally shift into 1st gear I almost always do it after coming to a halt or when I'm about to, but keep the clutch in until taking off again.

I generally avoid going to 1st gear while moving, as the tranny is not a syncromesh type....

but, at a very slow speed, if you load the engine with the foot brake, apply a slight bit of throttle to keep it pulling slightly, you and apply a light bit of toe pressure and tickle the clutch.

it will down-shift with just a click, and all is well...

I use this method to down shift when coming to a stop in all of the gears anyway, so for me, it is just habit now. I like using the engine to brake down to stops if possible.

One more response. The tranny is constant mesh so even though it is not synchromesh, downshifting into first is not a problem. As noted above, I wait until the transmission is happy about going into first. I also like to blip the throttle when downshifting with slight pressure on the shifter to try to match engine/transmission rotation and minimize stress on the gears (I also use compression braking which also assures I am in the correct gear should I need to accelerate). An old habit from the old times. Left foot on the ground, right on the brake.

My habit has been while coming to a stop I slowly downshift back to 2nd as I'm slowing down to a stop and then lastly back to 1st just before I come to complete stop, and left foot goes on the pavement. Stationary bike doesn't like to downshift from third or something, if you aren't moving a little the dogs and gears are not moving and often the dogs won't mesh going down thru the gears unless you let the clutch out a little to make things move....
They say 98% of all Hardleys ever made are still on the road..... The other 2% made it home.
(I stole this from somebody on another GW site...)
