Hi From Hemet, CA

Post by Tusler » Mon Oct 02, 2017 7:05 pm

I just picked up a 97 GL1500SE, really pretty black bike. I have always ridden Harleys or standard bikes like the old 900 z1's. had a 117ci chopper but it broke down to much. This thing rides like a Lincoln and being as I had a fusion on my lower back in 06 I really like the ride. In Ca on these superslabs under 70 you'll just about get run over, so Yester day I took the new used bike for a ride out to palm springs and back for a total of 88 miles. When I filled it up today before I headed out for another jaunt I noticed it took 3.75 gallons of gas :o thats like 23 mpg. So I filled it up and very gingerly went out to I-10 set the cruise (never had one of those :D ) on 65 and ran out to past Palm Springs and came back home for a total trip length of 80 miles. Filled it up and it took 3 gal of 87 octane, yea thats better at almost 27mpg but I told the wife I am not getting rid of the 1200 sportster anytime soon, I get 58mpg at 70 with it.
The GW idles perfect, accelerates smooth with good throttle response, it is very easy to roll, in fact much easier than the sportster. What do you pro's familiar with the 1500 think I should check or have checked if anything? I figure I will run some seafoam through the tanks and see if that helps, I have my doubts because it is running so smooth at all times.

Don't forget to ask Jesus for forgiveness before your last ride! :D

Welcome to the forum and to the wing.
You should be getting better than 40 mpg on the slab with the cruise set at 65 mph. My 99 when I had it, got 42 on a pgr run from El Cajon to Apple Valley 2 up with a 3x5 flag flying on the back. I would gander you either have a vacuum leak, in the carbs, vac lines or the vacuum petcock.

I spend winters in Oceanside and used to go to Hemet while a friend was still living there. I still ride through occasionally to ride up through Idelwild, Anza loop and through Warner Sp to be out and about.

I'll be back in a month or so, riding my 08 back from NH.

I was getting low/mid 30s on my bike until I did the following:
- spark plug change
- oil change (moved to synthetic)
- cleared the engine with seafoam

Up the mpg went, I am now getting 41-42, and I have the 70 mph super slabs up here in WA state too. Glad I am getting better, and the bike is humming better than ever. Find out the last time fluid changes and sparks were done, and it may be good to do on your ride.....and welcome to the GW ride. Once I got on one, I have not left which is nice.

My first Goldwing was a '95SE. I used an ounce of Startron Starbrite in every other tank, as I do with my 1800. I got 35-40 mpg typically although it went as high as 50 on an extended 55mph run and as low as 32 on a more than normal interstate tank.

Once you get over 3000 rpm, the mileage drops like a rock. But, its 87 octane and 40+ cents per gallon cheaper than the 93 octane so look at cost per mile as well. I changed plugs, filters (air, cruise and one other I can't remember with a negligible effect on mileage. Wrist twisting is the main culprit in my view.

Good luck with your ride and welcome to the road sofa club.

Thanks to all for the welcome and the info. I took it back to highland cycles where I bought it and they said the carbs were way out of adj and the plugs were all fouled and black. I had them bleed the brakes and check the pads while they were at it. They did not charge me anything and changed the plugs, tuned and synch'd the carbs. It starts super quick and easy and is so much smoother running than before so I expect the mileage will be much better. I also had him show me how to pick it back up if it falls off the side stand. I was glad to see with the guards this bike will not fall all the way and I can get it back up on the side stand if I have to by myself. Being a heavy bike I envision parking on the blacktop in July out here and coming out from lunch to find it over due to the side stand sinking, anyway I'm ready if it happens.

I used to set up the same way on my "old ride" way long time ago.....onward and upward ;)
