Not a secure site?

Post by TwoTone Trike » Thu Apr 19, 2018 12:51 am

Why is it when I come to this site and log in and also make a post it shows up in the site address that it is not secure? I know that this is a question for Wingadmin but if he doesn't see this post then he can't answer it. Is there anybody that maybe can offer an answer?

Goldwingdocs is an HTTP: site not HTTPS. http://goldwingdocs.com/. An HTTPS site is considered secure where an HTTP site is not. But, HTTPS is primarily used by sites that handle money—your bank's website or shopping carts that capture credit card data. Even many sites that do use HTTPS only use it for the portions of their websites that need it—like shopping carts or account pages. So, like just about every other Gold Wing forum, it is unlikely that GoldwingDocs will ever be one of those HTTPS secured sites.

Actually, we will support it. It's something that's coming with the site upgrade - I was working on exactly that tonight (https support), actually.

It doesn't mean that the site itself is insecure - what it means is that the connection between the web server and your web browser is not being encrypted.

TwoTone -
Seriously - Get AWAY from using Windoze.
I've been running Linux for at least 12-13
years now, and I go 'fearlessly into the night'
because Linux is not easily messed with by
outside idiots. When I see warnings like you
did, I just shrug and continue on.
Research Linux, ask friends, etc. And oh-by
the way - it's free - forever.

I can't imagine going back to Windoze after
all these years..........

Now now, let's just keep a level head here... if you encourage enough people to move away from Windows then us techs who support Windows might lose our job security!
Winging it every chance I get 8-)

19,119 miles when I got it from dad Oct 15, 2017 --- 21,698 miles and counting as of May 22, 2018!

Sorry Stew - just adding my $.02 from 40+
years in the computer industry. I cannot
argue with the success I've had using
Linux .vs. Windows...(I started with Windows
3.1). Back then, it was the only train running,
so I had to use it. Running Linux the last 12-13
years has shown me that there ARE stable and
secure OS's out there, not so vulnerable to
all the crank-heads out there wanting to mess
up my computer. Sorry you are working for
Microsludge - if you're a good programmer,
try to get a job with Canonical (Ubuntu) or
other top-level Linux group.
I just cannot go back to Windoze, putting up
with all the software overhead and disk trashing
that Windoze wants to do...........not to mention
Bill Gates wanting money for every new trinket....

PS - TwoTone - it doesn't have to be an all-or-nothing
choice. You can keep Windows and install Linux
alongside of it - 'dual-boot'. I'm not trying to hijack
this into a computer thread, just trying to help yet
another person enjoy the benefits of Linux. Please
ask around in your local circle about how to set it
up and still keep your Windows intact...it costs nothing.
You could also Google "dual booting with linux".
Anyway, enjoy the ride !!

Hey Leaky, You're not hijacking anything as this started out as a computer thing. I appreciate you taking the time to try and help me. I'm not very computer literate anyway, so any help I can get is great. I'll set it up tomorrow as a dual boot. Good talking to you. Thanks , Tony.

WHOA!
TwoTone / Tony - please don't plunge headlong into this
until you know what you are doing - God forbid you
mess up your 'puter on my account. I'm just trying to
open your horizons. Generally, if you have Windows now,
the simple steps are:
1. De-frag your Windows system
2. Shrink the volume size on your Windows system.
This frees up x-amount of space for Linux.
As little as 5-10 GB will work, or use 1/2 of
your hard drive size.
3. Download and burn to DVD your choice of Linux.
(Burn the .ISO downloaded file to DVD, then boot
off of it. Installing it takes much less time than Windows)
Linux Mint is really a nice, Windows-like distribution.
If you hate it, try another of the 400+ distros out there.
HINT - whatever devices you intend to use (printers,
scanners, whatever) - connect them up and turn them
on during the install. This way, the installer will detect
and install the proper drivers if they exist in the Linux
drivers database.
Used to using Microsoft Office ? Linux comes with
Libreoffice, which will open/edit/save nearly 98.99%
of any document/spreadsheet made with Office.

This aint Kansas anymore Dorothy - your not hemmed
in by stupid licensing crap- or paying for ANYTHING !

Best of luck to you - let us know how it went................

TwoTone -
don't worry about it - just keep it in mind
that there IS another world besides Microsoft,
and that world is FREE. Talk amongst your friends,
maybe some are already using it. Ya' never know.
Best riding to you !!!!!!!!!
