Newbe needing some help.

Postby HadCancer » Tue Dec 28, 2010 4:50 pm

I am having a 1982 goldwing restored as it had only 2554 miles on it. I am an old fart (59) and retired/disabled. The only thing on the stock bike I will have a problem is with the seats. I have a bad back so I need some support for my back. I googled for seats and and found 2 sites with seats backs for the driver. One was a kit for a back rest and one was for a whole seat with passenger arn rests, but it is brown and it looks like it was a used seat. That seat is brown not black and are asking 400.00. Not sure if add is current. Do any of you know of sites that sell / make aftermarket seats for a 1982 1100i Goldwing? :?:

Thank-you thank-you Thank-you. I think you found just about the best I could hope for. I know the paint job for this baby is going to cost me the most on the restore. I went to a site close to me and picked out 2 patterns for the gold wing. One was 5000.00 and the other was 11,000. I asked them what their cheapest paint job was and they told me 5000.00 maybe a little less if I was willing to cut corners.
I got into computer art after my cancer surgury and have even won a few small awards. The genleman I hired to restore my Goldwing said he could take my artwork and transfer to the bike like I would do for a t-shirt after he sprayed a base coat and the spray a bunch of clear coats over it. I will proably do a pinups and dragons for it. I think that would be cool. I know the purest would want the stock paint job and the bike would likely have more value, but I have no plans to ever resell the bike unless I win the lottery.
Thanks for all the help. I will try to post a picture(s) when the bike is done.
Thanks
Rick

Congrats on getting the Wing and having it restored. WOW! $5,000.00 to $11,00.00 for a paint job on a motorcycle is pretty pricey. You might want to shop around and get estimates somewhere else unless you just want this shop to do the work. If someone even quoted me 11 k to paint a bike I would be out the door, laughing all the way. None of our business but what are they charging for the restore?

I bought a seat from jcwhitney for around $200, it had the gel packs in the seats front and rear, I then got a backrest from Utopia.com , with this and a throttle boss, this made for a greater ride than ever.
It's not what you buy, it's what you build.

I have not found a lot of stuff on ebay for the Gl1100, It seems they made the 83 model a little longer than the 82. I read if I was willing to give up the back carrier I could use the 82+ seats, but I did not want to make the sacrafice unless I had to.

This bike shop I got the quote from is trying to compete with Orange County Coppers, and they have some pretty wild designs. I do not think they even do stock paint jobs. Like I wrote the guy restoring the bike is going to put a base coat on (probably stock), and then transfer my dragon and pinups on to the bike and then spray it with a bunch of clear coats. I know that will make my bike totally unique. ( although the wife is not all that thrilled about the pin-ups)

Ok, what is a throttle boss? I assume it has something to do with the throttle. Is it like cruise control? If that is the case that could well explain why the 82 has what looks to be a cheap plastic on the the 80 parts bike has a nice chrome one.

It's a little piece, usually on the end of the throttle handlebar, that sticks out and lets you use the palm of your hand to keep the throttle open, to help keep your hand from getting sore holding it twisted open:

Throttle boss
Throttle boss
