I keep getting this every time I log in and it's getting annoying.

You exceeded the maximum allowed number of login attempts. In addition to your username and password you now also have to solve the CAPTCHA below.

I usually log in once / day. Is that more than maximum?

Is there a fix for this? I'm going to delete the Cookie and see of that helps.

The same thing happened to me a few days ago (I had not attempted any other logins prior to getting the message). Answered the question and normal service was resumed and has worked fine since then.. Just a glitch I suspect on the server somewhere.

I deleted the Cookies and seems to be working as it should now.

It was happening to me even after answering the skill testing question correctly. Didn't log me in just asked another question.

It's definitely related to cookies, no question about that. Let me know if it happens to you again now that you've deleted your cookies.

It happened to me last week as well, I thought maybe I hit a wrong key on signing in, it made me keep trying to log in over and over. So I never got on site that day, but the next day at work I did without a problem.

The same thing happened to me today as well. As soon as I logged in it told me I had made too many attempts. Once I solved the CAPTCHA, it was fine the rest of the session. Perhaps it will happen again. We will see.

Have had any log in hassles after clearing Cookies but now something different is happening.

1. Log in as normal and check the recent posts.

2. Click reply button and reply page comes up.

3. Click post or submit and takes me back to the log in page saying - You have to be logged in ..........

4. Log in yet again and loose whatever I typed as a response.

I was logged in to start with.

I finally figured out what is causing this. Not a solution, but at least a cause.

The problem is with all PHPBB-based boards right now. There is a group of Russian hackers that is hitting every PHPBB board. They view the forums, view the users who have posted, then start dictionary attacks against their password. Essentially they try every word in the dictionary, and lists of thousands of common passwords, against each account. Of course, this means the next time you log in, the board thinks you've made lots of invalid login attempts, and makes you do the captcha answer again, to ensure you are a human and not a robot (which does exactly what it's supposed to - foils the hackers robots).

If they do manage to guess your password, they start posting all kinds of spam, which of course appears to be coming from you, because they're using your account.

Unfortunately, it's a real pain for everyone who is a legitimate user. The PHPBB developers have promised a fix for it that will retain the security, but not hassle the valid users, in the next release of the system.

In the meantime...please make sure you have a good password, one that cannot be easily guessed! If you have a simple password, now is a good time to change it to something more complex.

Thanks for the very enlightening post. That explains a lot. I will make sure I let my BBS users know about this as well. The Russians are the individuals that were pelting us with BOT registrations before I finally went through with the 3.0.8 upgrade. Now I know that we need to increase our password security as well. They have not intruded on us just yet but I know it is just a mater of time before they do.

Those Ruskies obviously have too much free time. What would be the point if they gained access via someone's account??

If I made my password any harder I would forget it.

Keep in mind that if an intruder did have your password, you would not get the message "You exceeded the maximum allowed number of login attempts." That only means that they are using your login name and are trying to access your account by trying different passwords and have yet to find the proper combination. So in essence, your password is secure for the time being. Rest assured though, if they have tried your name in the past, they will try it again in the future. A strong password is the only safeguard you have to prevent anyone from accessing your account and leaving SPAM or malicious content in your name.

If your name and password is compromised, the intruder not only can leave info in your name but capture any info you have on the system such as full name, address, location, email address, or anything else you have added to your personal information.

Here is a site to tell how to Create Strong Passwords ---> http://www.microsoft.com/security/onlin ... reate.aspx

To check password strength, try this site. ---> https://www.microsoft.com/security/pc-s ... =Site_Link
