New helmet!

Postby WingAdmin » Mon Mar 07, 2011 4:12 pm

Well, I finally did it. Just hit the "Buy" button on a new helmet - an Arai Profile, in Silver Frost:

I have a weird, long (front to back) shaped head, and it's tough to find a helmet to fit me. My old Shoei is now coming up on 7 years old, and that's too old for a helmet. I was going to replace it last year, but wanted to wait until the Snell 2010 certifications made their way onto the Arai's. Even after all that wearing, the Shoei still gave me hot spots on my upper forehead and the back of me head.

The new Arai is a Profile, and is designed specifically for people with my head shape. I tried it at the bike show last year, and it felt amazing! Now I need to order a new intercom headset to put into it.

It will be sad to say goodbye to my old Shoei - it's been with me through a lot of miles - but I'm really looking forward to my new Arai!

I too just bought a new brain bucket. This one has a red button by the chin. When you push it,the whole chin guard lifts up.Pretty cool. Now if I could only get the BT Interphones to work.So far I've sampled 3 of them and each one is inoperative. They charge up but wont turn on.

I got the helmet today, very quick from Revzilla - two days! I've had it on now for just about an hour. My old Shoei would have started to hurt by now - this one feels just great. I'm going to say it's a keeper! I'm pretty amazed at some of the features it has, and at the overall build quality - my old Shoei was by no means a cheap helmet, but this Arai blows it away.

I've ordered a new J&M "Elite" series headset from Cyclemax for it, hopefully it will show up sometime this week, and I'll install it.

Is the slot in the front where you put in the straw?

:) That is a vent (it's opened in the picture), and it leads through a foam filter to a slot right in front of your mouth. There's so many slots and vents and spoilers and defoggers and gizmos on this helmet...

I have a George Lopez Head, think they can help me..???  Is there a item number for that helmet ya got there.. I use a 3/4 shell just because, I have a fullface but it's a little tight, must be all the knowledge I have absorbered off this site, aahhhh  I found the noise to be worse with a fullface, the wind makes a highpitch sound that makes my brain hurt, the 3/4 shell doesn't do that so much, but the ear plugs usually takes care of the noise...Maybe I got the wrong fullface..

I have had a fairly high-end Shoei for many years now. It's pretty quiet, does not buffet in the wind, and has always worked well. However, my head is longer front to back than side to side, so I would get horrible pressure pain on my forehead and the back of my head after about an hour and a half with it.

Arai is different in that they make several different helmets for different head shapes. The Profile helmet (which I got) is what they call a "long oval", so it fits my head properly. I tried it on at the Cleveland motorcycle show last year, and was very impressed. The other thing about Arai's is that they sell different sized cheek pads and liners to further customize the helmet to fit your head. The guy there recommended I get a 7mm liner rather than the 10mm it comes with, and I'm glad I did.

Have a look at this: HOW TO PROPERLY FIT AN ARAI HELMET

Yeh I have a Fulmer " Modus" on the side it says, I got it because I loved the idea the whole front comes up on it... but I don't think it was near a high end helmet, the side cheek pads come off, I sure have learned a lot more about the subject, thanks..

Wingman, when you were in the UK did you get to visit any cycle shops? Are there helmet law's there? How many cycles did you see riding around..My daughter got a chance to go there last year with some of her senior mates, she loved it..
