82 Goldwing purchase

Postby lyman54 » Fri Mar 11, 2011 8:26 am

I'm thinking of buying an '82 Goldwing. I guess it would be considered a standard. No fairing but has hard saddlebags. It has 16,900 miles on re-built motor and tranny. Excellent condition for $2000 Cdn. A really good looking bike. What do you guys think? I'm no expert on Wing's. I did have a 1980 GL1100 Interstate for a few month's last summer and liked it, but am more accustomed to the basic with no fairing. Thanks.

Well if it had to have the motor and transmission rebuilt, I hightly doubt that it actually has 16,900 miles as the engine/transmission on these bikes are good for 250,000 miles or more. Either that or it sat for a really long time, and was abused.

That said, if it's in decent shape, that could be a good price for it. You will want to ask how recently the timing belts were changed, have a look at the condition of the shocks, brakes and tires. Check the frame very closely for corrosion.

Good luck!

I'm sorry I didn't mention it was rebuilt 4 years ago. I will check everything like you said. Thank you very much. The quoted mileage is since the rebuild.

I'd do a very close once-over of every fastener, bolt, nut, and so on. I do this every spring on my bike, and periodically throughout the year. It's amazed (and scared) me at times to find what comes loose.

Thank you. Yes I did that with my Sportster every winter. Of course with the Sporty I wasn't too surprised to find loose bolts. Had to check often for that.

Every time I find something that's loosened off, I tend to loctite it, so it won't happen again.

Hi,
If the condition of the goldwing is as good as you described then $2000 is really the right price for this 82 goldwing...
Go and get it...
Thanks

Yes I know thanks. Unfortunately other things came up and I have to pass on it. They'll be others though, another time.

One thing that I have always been told is that you cannot trust anything automotive from Quebec. The laws are way too loose and they allow mileage roll backs etc. Tbh a engine transmission rebuild would prolly cost what he wants for the bike. I would be more willing to believe that it was just rolled over or rolled back.

Just my 2 cents.

I assure you that Quebec does not allow mileage rollbacks. It is a serious offence as it is in any other province. That being said, it is something to be aware of.
