First ride of the year

Postby scratcho » Fri Mar 18, 2011 2:58 pm

Took my first ride today. About 60 degrees and I couldn`t stand it. Went down to the park road, talked with all the other riders that made it out today. Doesn`t look like I will get another chance to ride for at least a week. Well I am refreshed maybe I can make it through the rest of winter.

I so wanted to....but buried in work since early this morning, and still that way now. Maybe tomorrow if the weather holds up...

Hi, all
I took about a 80 mile ride yesterday for 1st time this year also. it was very nice day. Most all the snow is gone. Boy it is about time I did not think winter was ever going to get over this year. Bad part it just might still snow again this year. :(

I made it out today! I spent the morning finishing the "pull out from winter slumber" tasks, pulled on my new helmet and went out for a few hours this afternoon. Took a bit of convincing to get the engine started, and it's not happy running on the "sat in the tank all winter" gas, same as every year - just a little bit of stumbling coming off idle and at low revs. Once this tank is empty, I'll dump a can of Seafoam in with some fresh gas, and it should clear up, just like it always does.

It was great getting out to ride, and seeing lots of other bikes - no Wings however!

Whoa baby! I got to take the ole girl to work last Friday... we had 80 degrees here in NYC!! thought I was in a dream!!! even though I had her out in the driveway during a break in the snow (to move a new outboard motor into the garage for my son) and was sitting on her while she purred, still no comparison to last Friday....

The trip in at 5:45 AM up to The Bronx was a little cool (about 45 degrees when I left) but as soon as the sun came up the temps soared up and hit over 80 degrees in some parts.... I was so anxious to leave work and get back on the road we worked through coffee break and didn't even stop for lunch...

Got all the equipment into position and then packed up the crane truck by 1:30 PM and then jumped on the wing and hit the road.... didn't even mind sharing it with all the tractor trailers on I-95 South back towards the bridge to Queens/Long Island... once back on the island, headed for my favorite beach run and took a leisurely roll home via the back-roads rather than the parkway....

Now they are talking about more snow this week, and even saw some today as it was raining all day long (took the 4 wheeler in so I could stay dry)... Can't wait for all this mixed up weather to finally settle down...

Got out yesterday for a short ride. Late afternoon it started droping in temperature, so I came back home. Now it looks like winter is coming back again. Weatherman says no 60s in foreseeable future.

We got teased with that 60 degree weather too, now they have more hazardous weather warnings with snow and sleet. Looks like the riding gets another push back, I'm glad a few of you got out for a ride.

We only got 6 inches, but it was wet and heavy. The trees are loaded down, I hope we don't have a power failure to boot. This'll set back that first ride a week or so!

The other day I got the old girl out from her corner of the garage where she sleeps all winter. Put her battery back in, put on the charger, 20 minutes later I fired her up. She wasn't too pleased to be woken up so early but she did come to life and after a few minutes of rough idle she smoothed out and was quite responsive to the throttle. I shut down to let her sleep and went to bed myself dreaming of the ride I would take the next day. I woke Wednesday morning and to my dismay found about 15 inches of snow had fallen during the night. WTF is it with weathermen? They go on and on about the storm of the year which always fizzles out, then they say nothing about more snow and you end up with the storm of the year :)

Anyway, long story short, To the OP - colour me jealous.

My annual ritual on the first day of spring is to register and insure my Wing and then take it to work. No way this year with 3 inches of snow on the ground and more coming.

Looking forward to my first ride of the season -- up to P-town via the back roads, through the National Seashore on roads that parallel the beach, doing a ferocious 15-20 mph with the mask tipped back. You can get drunk on all that oxygen! The best part is that the roads are practically deserted, so I can go slowly and enjoy the ride without leading a parade.

Anybody wanna join me?

It gets very dangerous in the really hot season, most people (and I am ashamed to say, me included) wear almost no protection (just a helmet and gloves) during that time and hope we don't come off. It just gets too hot to wear a jacket or long pants, then you get sunburnt (as you don't have a jacket or pants!). During the really hot days, I just take the car.. I still wouldn't move from here :D
