Advise Please

Post by Britanicus » Fri Mar 25, 2011 1:38 am

I got an 82 GW, I was told by my mechanic that I should bail out of her and get into an 85 or newer 1500 as parts for the 1100's are getting harder and harder to find.

Is this something I should consider? I got the bike certified last summer so I should be able to get 3k for it more or less therby only having to go about 3k more into the wallet for a good 1500.

Thoughts please Gents.

I have had an 82 1100 for quite a few years. Parts are not hard to find. Wear items like tires, brakes etc. are readily available from multiple vendors. Things like water pumps, seals, hoses, brake caliper and master cylinder rebuild kits etc. are also readily available.

Some replacement parts are available new, but the majority of replacement parts available are going to be used - and there doesn't seem to be any shortage of those. When I got my bike, I had the same worry that you had, so I got a spare engine that I expected to cannibalize for parts. I've now had this bike for 6 years, and I have never once had to pull a part off that engine. The thing is, these bikes, when maintained decently, just don't break! :)
