A new member of the Gold Wing family...

Postby bubba9710 » Mon May 02, 2011 10:01 am

Well, after 8 years of not having a bike I just made an incredible deal on the sweetest 1981 GL1100. It is a true dream bike. It has 107,000 kms on it but runs pretty smooth. The previous owner had new timing belt installed 2 years ago, redid the carbs, and installed a new fuel pump.

On top of that, it's been customized just the way I would've done it! The fairing has been swapped out for a clear windshield, additional driving lights have been added (need to replace the bulbs and change out the damaged toggle), Indian Head light installed on front fender, trunk removed/bags remain, fishtail exhaust, plus he added an oil dipstick at the front left side! I love it!

My dad has a 1980 GL1100 and we're looking forward to riding together again this summer. He saw my bike yesterday and was taking notes on some of the modifications (especially the dipstick) to look at incorporating them on his bike. Nicely enough, he has a second '80 GL1100 for parts - you never know what might be needed or when!

Looking forward to a long summer of riding! I plan to run the Pacific Coast Highway later this summer...once I've worked all the kinks out of me and the Wing!!

I'm going to get to an oil change and an air filter change asap. Other than that, any other suggestions of what should be done to get her in top shape for this season?

Having a resource like this is priceless, there are some great Goldwing sites around, so you will have plenty of guys here and there if you ever need a hand with anything , a bonus is having your Dad around to help.. If you have any issues the chances are great that someone has come across it here... :D

Hey Wally, I finally took some time to snap a few pictures of the bike...what can I say? I am enjoying riding way too much! So, take a peek at my pics and tell me what you think.

I'm sure grateful for this forum...it has been very helpful so far and I've only been a proud Wing owner for a month. Thanks for making me feel welcome.

See you all out on the road...which is where I'm heading shortly.

Your bike is looking good! I hope those fish tail exhaust don't turn into shin knockers, enjoy the ride!
