Need bike history / no title & no bill of sale

Postby Clayton » Fri Oct 02, 2009 12:55 pm

I have a parts bike that I purchased without a title or bill of sale that I intended to use for parts, but after a little work on it I have decided that it is worth possibly rebuilding. I would like to know if someone knows of a service that will run the vin # in order to see if I could even register the bike. I do not know the full history of the bike, because the person I bought it from did not have a title since he bought it as a parts bike himself. Just want to make sure it is not stolen.

Typical vin # search services state that the vin # is invalid. Yet http://www.pronto-net.com/vin_app/vin.php shows where the bike was manufactured.

Any help would be appreciated.

My first guess would be to talk to your friendly local police station. They should be able to run the VIN and check if it is stolen, I'm pretty sure.

Thank you for the response. I have recently bought another truck and will have the numbers ran when I go and register the truck. I was hoping to try and gather some background info before I had the vin checked.

Thanks

First you have to find a friendly policeman, sometimes that's hard to find around here.

lol

Hopefully it won't be the policeman that pulled me over a few weeks back.
Seeing as how I was on the bike taking it for a short test drive! :o

However, he did not ticket me. I guess he might be one of those nice, and I do mean very nice, policemen out there. :D

Now I know you might be thinking "why didn't you have the vin # run then".
No title, no registration, no etc..... I was very fortunate to have escaped that one.

I would like to brag and say that I have "THE GIFT", but I do not.

Some how, I must have been favored by the gods on that particular day. :D

I am in same situation. I traded for a bike a couple months ago. After lot of searching I found this link
https://www.nicb.org/cps/rde/xchg/nicb/ ... check.html

NICB's VINCheckSM is a service provided to the public to assist in
determining if a vehicle has been reported as stolen, but not
recovered, or has been reported as a salvage vehicle by cooperating
NICB members

In Tennessee you can apply for a title for vehicles over 30yrs old. I found it was not stolen or salvage titled and then applied for a lost title. I had to go to the Tn gov site and find out the rules for "Certification of ownership" I had to post the bike in paper for 10 business days. Get estimate of value from dealer and let them do a pencil trace of the vin. Pre restore pics.
I took it to the county clerk and applied for lost title. Got a plate and registration papers that day. they said it would take 3 months to get a title.
