First time post with a question. GL 1200 mpg

Postby Johnhs » Fri Jun 03, 2011 9:45 am

Hi, I'm new to the forum and new to Goldwing riding. I have about 500 miles now on my new (to me) GL1200 and I'm getting about 41mpg. I'm wondering how other riders are doing with the liquid gold. More, less, the same? Any fuel efficiency tips?

I found the forum while looking for info. on belt changes. No history available for the last/any belt change on Big Red.

That's about what I get (40,000 on the odometer). I tend to get on the throttle harder than I should from time to time, and cruise too fast on the highway. Best ways I know to maximize mpg:
1. Maintain proper tire pressure
2. Accelerate slowly
3. Stay in the highest gear you can without lugging
4. Cruise at the speed limit (better mileage at lower speeds, but even if you stick to the speed limit you'll have people running you over from behind)

If you have 44K miles on the bike and don't know if the belts have been changed you need to change them. It is a lot less expensive than a new engine.

Belts done. Right side was scary loose but no tooth degradation so I got lucky.
Know where I can find the two mounting brackets (right & left sides) for the lower fairing that mount to the bottom radiator attachment points?

I ended up making mine two years ago. Do a search on Farring repair. molded expanded metal right into the ABS plastic with just plumbers
Purple primer and ABS Black Cement. Our board Administrator has a good artical on building up is upper trunk on his bike.I found the Purple Primer fused the three peaces togather right before my eyes.but then I mixed up shavings and added the ABS Cement for added suport.

I got the idea from his posting and just went a step further by adding the metal strip.I just checked it the other day, and it is as solid as the day I put it all togather.I did this to both sides....In fact I just fixed a cracked cover on my glove box by mixing the above materials. Was thinking of posting pictures of that, but just been way to busy installing a InstaTrike kit made by Tow-Pac on my old Wing.

Heh.. I thought that sounded like excellent fuel mileage! One of our wimpy US gallons wouldn't get you quite as far down the road...
