I`d like to but, my speedo quit working. The drive unit doesn`t turn when you spin the wheel. Anyone have a speedo drive for a 83 Interstate? Dennis

I'm pretty sure you can still ride it with a non-functioning speedo? :) :)

I'd love something like this here on Lawnguyland... I would enjoy taking the ole girl out to show her off.

Well, I apologize to anyone who showed up expecting to meet me there tonight. I've had a long and interesting night.

I got there about 7 pm, and it was just me and one other guy. I had something to eat, and by then a few more people had showed up (they usually get 20-30 bikes). Around 7:30, I got a call - my brother in law (22 years old, a new biker, got his first bike - a 250 Ninja - four months ago) had taken an unfamiliar corner out in the country at 80 mph, way too fast for the corner, and dumped the bike. He was in an ambulance heading for the hospital. I hopped back on my Wing and headed for home.

I spent the evening in the ER with my wife, watching the doctors dig gravel out of my brother in law while he moaned and swore in pain. He was very lucky - no broken bones, just some road rash. Thankfully he was wearing his helmet. However, the rest of his protective gear was sitting at home, where it wasn't doing him much good.

Here's the protection a T-shirt will give you - (i.e. none):

Road Rash
Road Rash

He's going to be very stiff and sore for quite some time. I feel sorry for the guy, really. He says he's never getting on a bike ever again.

Arrrgh! Tell him I for one feel his pain.... been there done that... many, many years ago on a hot summer night I was taking a new girlfriend for a ride on the bike and then we were destined to wind up out on my boat "watching the submarine races" out in the bay by moonlight..... Well, coming off the Meadowbrook Parkway onto Merrick Road in Freeport I hit a patch of something on the road surface which was later identified as the little glass balls used for roadway paint striping to make it retro-reflective (you know the white painted lines that kinda glow when your headlights hit them) when added to the paint when it's being applied. Seems a roadway painting/marking contractor has repainted the intersection earlier that day and must have spilled some of the glass beads on the road surface.... I came along and it was like hitting a patch of ice.... the bike just went right over on it's left side, and both my passenger and I were dumped on the pavement.

Like WingAdmin's BIL I was "too hot" to wear my leather jacket and was wearing shorts and a tee shirt (not to mention my boat shoes with no socks)... to say my left side looked like the picture WingAdmin posted would be an understatement... After spending several hours in the ER and experiencing a nurse with a scrub brush cleaning my road rash to remove gravel and such, I swore never to ride without long pants and leathers again...

To this day even if I ride in hot weather, I ride fully covered.

WingAdmin, tell your BIL that he has joined a rare group of us who were lucky enough to walk away with just some missing skin and some pride... Hopefully he will have learned that nothing can help you walk away from a mishap such as this, like a good set of leathers and a helmet... Hopefully he'll slow down a bit and save the high speed stuff for more suitable arenas..

Wish him well for me and tell him not to give up riding, just to try to learn from this experience...

Well now that he's started to heal a bit, and the pain is dulled thanks to prescription narcotics, he's rethinking his "never going to ride a motorcycle again" statement. :)

This story just re-inforces my fears. I returned to riding after several years of raising family and chasing my career. I realize I'm no spring chicken and won't bounce without breaking. It effects my riding. Ouch. I hope you brother in law heals soon and feels better.
