Paint scheme question

Postby pipeman52 » Mon Jul 25, 2011 10:25 am

Hello all, New member and new owner! Just picked up a 1982 GL1100A mechanically strong, cosmetically weak... but then I only gave up $650.00 :D . I was wondering, I know '82 was the first year of the Aspencade and which color choices were available ( mine is a faded out two tone brown ) would it hurt the value of the bike to paint a two tone non-Wing scheme? Any opinions? Thanks!

The value of the bike is in the wallet of the beholder. I'm not familiar with the collectability of that model but I would guess it would be on the low end of the scale. For me I would be looking at something else if I wanted to collect. That being said I would paint it whatever colors my heart desired.

Hello and welcome to the forum.
I basically know of three models of Goldwing that are collectible; the 1976 Limited, the 1985 Limited and the 1986 Aspencade SEi.

Thanks for the replies! Like I said, new to the bike so wasn't sure about the value as it was the first Aspencade year. I now feel good about changing the color to my choice ;)

Welcome to the site from Sheboygan Wi.
My 1982 A is also Brown, I think it looks Ok. In fact I'm going to install a Trike kit,and will have to paint the frame and Fenders to match, so will be looking for that cow brown paint . :D

I would seriously consult the one who paints it before deciding on a color.

Tri-coats are popular but as the name indicates, it takes 3 coats to give the sparkle and depth we all love.

Maybe $$$$ is no factor for you but your color makes a hugh difference in the cost.

I had mine done last year. Didn't look to keep it a honda color (not for or against it-was just looking). I found a Toyota body service manager and he agreed to do mine. He told me to go find 3 colors I liked, then come back and he would plug it in to the computer and see the cost difference. EEEKS.

I wanted white for visibility, he talked me out of it saying that any touch up would be hard and expensive. We ended up picking a relatively new red we found on a mustang. Looks like a tri coat but goes on in one application. mine is a 95 and had 42 pieces if I remember correctly. He told me that the paint was extremely good quality, would hold up to rocks and weather as good as any. Also, he could touch up a spot without having to do the whole piece over. That was one year ago and so far so good.

You can take a part from the bike to any automotive paint house that has a scanner and they can make the quantity you need to paint the trike kit.
