why did I wait so long????

Postby calan » Thu Aug 04, 2011 8:18 pm

For the last 5 years I've been riding a 2003 Yamaha royal star midnight venture. I LOVED my venture....it rode so smooth, and looked so pretty. I put over 55,000 miles on it. Last Thursday, I decided I wanted to buy a 2nd bike. I shopped around for a 1st generation Venture....but ended up getting a 1984 gl1200I. Riding the 125 miles home from where I made the purchase, I had a rude awakening. As much as I hated to admit it.....this thing rides better than my Venture....smoother, easier to handle....less vibration. This past Saturday my fiancee came over to go riding. She took the wing...I took the venture. I found myself feeling jealous of her, and pouting to myself that SHE gets to ride the wing....and I get 'stuck' with the venture. I decided on the way into town, that I had to have a NEWER wing...it was the only way to avoid a spat over who gets the wing and who gets the Venture.....so....we went shopping. By 4pm saturday, I was the proud owner of a "new' 2010 gl1800. I traded the Venture.

I think I'm still in shock....even though this is usually how I do things....on the spur of the moment. All the way home on the 1800 - I couldn't help but notice, again, how SMOOTH it handles, how EASY it corners, how light it feels in contrast the the venture. When I think of all the miles I rode on my beloved Venture, only to end up completely worn out at the end of the vacation......I have to ask myself...why did I wait so long????

I look forward to putting thousands of miles on my new Wing....and hopefully I'll make some new friends HERE in the process.

Sex is like air. It's really not that important until you're not getting any.

Hey Calan I know the feeling. I used to always ride in my younger days but have been out of it for about 30 yrs. I seen an 84 Goldwing that needed a stator for $1000.00. So I took it in for a saftey and the stator. Now for 2700.00 shes on the road and I'm back on two wheels. As you say I wish I had not waited so long.

I have always ridden sport bikes and my kids forced me to get a wing (Refused to go on the back of the sport bikes), like you I wondered why I had waited so long and why I had been so against getting one all these years!! I have an 1800 also and it's just great, the kids love going on it too..

Welcome to the club.

I rode Harleys for 47 years, yes, I did say that. I bought this wing brand new last fall, and also now say to myself "what was I thinkin" that I did not try one before. I gotta tell you, there is not a finer motorcycle made. It is a bit boring, with no noise, and no challenge riding it, and nobody yelling nice bike from the roadsides, but I ride all day and still got some left to ride some more. I put 5,000 miles on this one in a three week period, and rode the Tail of the Dragon at Deals Gap, and the Devils Triangle, and the Charahola Skyway, and the handling is fantastic. I have put over 10,000 miles on it since I got it, and every time I leave the driveway it is another excellent adventure. It handles and powers like a sport bike, yet the comfort is reminiscent of my living room sofa. Quite a combination. I tried out a 2011 Harley Ultra Glide classic, and a 2011 Road Glide Screaming Eagle at two separate Harley Demo rides, and the new Kawasaki Vulcan at their demo ride, and the wing has it over all of them by leaps and bounds. If the wing has any match out there, it has to be the Valkyrie. Ride on brothers.

P.S.: still a bit upset about the outdated GPS and Stereo units on the 2009/2010 Canadian versions of these bikes, but Garmin is working on the GPS software anyway. Our complaints to all the people we complained to have been heard (maybe) These two items, however, do not affect the ride... which is still beyond compare.
It ain't about the destination - it's all about the journey

My wife has a VT750 Aero (With shaft drive) and she loves it.. We regularly ride with one kid on the back of the VT and wing for family days-out!! Passions are so much more fun when you can share them with your family..
