we hit a deer!

Postby biker4christ » Tue Aug 30, 2011 3:43 pm

  we were runnin along about 55 mph just before dark and boom, outta nowhere an 8 pt buck slams into the front left side of the fairing, busted out my headlight and messed up the paint on the front fender, other than that it bent the brackets that hold the fairing on but it all straightend out nicely. :D .the only reason i believe we didnt go down is the good Lord had hold of that bike..broke the antlers off the deer so i do have a trophy from it all. im still amazed it didnt go down
i'll try to put up pics of the deer and bike if i can get em off the cell phone
:D GLAD TO BE ALIVE, :D ,BE SAFE OUT THERE. :D .. THEY ARE ON THE MOVE now that deer season is gettin ready to open and rut is startin soon

Praise God your ok. I hit a deer about 5 years ago with my 1100. I went down at 55 mph, I had a broken colar bone and the bike fair about the same. God is good all the time.

it killed the deer on impact,i believe it pushed both antlers into his skull, when i went to move the deer both antlers were loose in its skull. so i just had to cut the skin to remove em.
i really believe thet the fairing bein mounted to the bike frame instead of the forks is why it stayed up,if it was mounted on the forks it would have made the front end turn, but it only bent it up about an inch,it was still ridable,we had to ride 10 miles with no headlight but we had all the marker lights,we stopped at wally world and put a new light on it and rode another 15 miles home.removed the fairing and bent the supports back in place and its good as new :D

Did you by chance have the whistles installed? If so, obviously they do not work.
Been thinking of adding a set to my ride since deer are pretty plentiful in Texas. So far, no close calls but as they say, not IF, but WHEN
Can anyone advise of their experience with the whistles?

I ride a lot in the mountains of West Virginia big and plentiful deer there as well. I have come close to a few, but never hit one, mostly in car or truck. I have had a set of whistles on every bike I have every owned. The route I take to go home to wv and visit family is very curvy, mountainous and I usually travel at night, I have never had a deer jump or even move toward me, and I have seen plenty so; so far in my experience I would have to say the whistles work. It also helps when i ride my VTX that it is obnoxiously loud, so cracking the pipe seem to cause them to jump opposite the sound. I am so glad you are ok, and Yes GOD IS GOOD ALL THE TIME> Definitely watching out after the both of you. I say both because you said we. So I assume you had a passenger. The extra weight may have played a small part in keeping the bike upright. Not taking any credit away from GOD just saying.

It sounds like I need to get those whistles mounted before I find myself in the same situation as biker4christ!

Sure glad you are ok....I'm gonna have to check out the whistles also...I had a doe jump out and hit me about 2 years ago...It hit both me and the wife in the legs and bounced off. Not a mark on the bike...I managed to keep it up but thank god there wasn't anything coming in the opposite direction because I was all over the road keeping the bike up. I hardly ever ride at night because of the deer and also all the tire parts around. This was my bad for taking a short cut between highways on a little country road, at night, no lights to be seen and lots of curves...just to cut 15 minutes off the trip. Anyway, again glad you are ok, and the bike is fixable without too much expense.

You did get lucky! You're the first biker I've heard of that hit, or got hit by a deer and didn't go down. Usually they get up and run off back into the woods and you're left in the road with the loose bits in your skull. Hope you played the lottery after that one. Twilight is themost dangerous time away from the city. That's when all the critters are doing their shift changes. The daytime ones are going back to their nests, dens, burrows. While the nocturnal ones are out looking for a bite to eat. Plus, our wings are nice and quiet so they don't even know we're coming. They were never taught to look both ways before crossing, so we got to watch out for them. But I'm sure you know that now. Glad you're OK!
