new wing rider on an old wing

Postby dcrump » Sun Oct 09, 2011 5:08 pm

Just purchase my first wing, 1983 GL1100 Interstate. She's ugly but a good one. It has a Vetter Windjammer V Faring which was a dealer option and from what I understand was the last year for that option. The bags are not the correct ones for it. I bought this one to do a few minor repairs and then sell. Now that I have it I don't intend to part with it, even when I get a new one. Just so much fun. I'm looking for info on the correct bags and brackets and the faring lower halfs and where I can find both side covers.

I might be wrong, but I don't think that's an interstate. That looks like a dressed std. Interstates,I thought were factory dressed not a dealer installed option. The vetter fairing was the clue. Still a great bike. I've got a naked 83 and I love it.

If that's the bike in the photo there, it's far from ugly...

When you get up close you can see how bad the rattle can paint job is. Not to mention all the cracks in the bags.

The title called it a GL1100I.

Yeh, mine's a rattle job too, one thing about that is you can fix any scratches or dings that may arise yourself..I like that idea..If someone were to pay a grand or more to have a pro do it right, you might get a little more uptight about a scratch because it's not likely you could fix it like he could..Unless your a pro of course...I sure ain't...

I'm going to do a bunch of crack repairs on the bags and then take all the parts that can be painted and rattle can all of them myself. Researched it online and got some good ideas for it. My grandson wants it candy apple red.

I was going to keep it blue but my Grandson got to pick the color for this one, he's 8. He's also going to help prep it for the paint. I will probably let him spray a side panel. That's an easy fix if it comes out bad.
