A gun for my 1500?

Post by spiderjack » Tue Nov 01, 2011 4:34 pm

I like to do a lot of camping on my GL1500 - and I mean real camping, like just me, a tent and the wilderness kind of camping. I carry a 9mm pistol with me when I travel (licensed, concealed carry) but I'd like something a bit more than that to protect myself from something that might view me as a nice, light snack while I'm asleep in my tent. That said, I know I can't sling a rifle into my saddle, cowboy-style, and it's got to be protected from the elements. That means I need something that's going to fit in my bags or trunk - which means it's going to have to break down.

I've thought about the Kel-Tec Sub2000 rifle as it folds in half and could easily fit, but it's only a .40 rifle. I've also thought of a shotgun of some sort that breaks down, but I know nothing about shotguns (being a pistol guy) and wouldn't know where to start.

Can anyone make some suggestions as to what they know might work and what they have tried?

I carry a S&W 41 magnum when I camp, whether I'm on the bike or not. I also carry bear spray which is probably the better of the two, it will stop just about anything instantly and you won't have to answer to the law.

How about something like this?

Scroll down halfway and look at the mini draco.

Then leave some raw meat out and dare sump'n to come along.

I've always thought one of the Henry AR-7 Survival Rifles would be great. It's waterproof, and breaks down to only the stock (the action and barrel fit in the stock) - but it's only a .22, so more of a "lost in the wilderness and need to take some small game to eat" rather than a "hungry mountain lion is attempting to make you his dinner" kind of gun.

I would suggest to carry the Judge Tauris handgun. It fires a 45 cal long rounds or a 410 shotgun shells. Its legal to carry with a CCW permit.

I like my Taurus .41 magnum. Stainless finish resists corrosion, good grip and barell porting reduces recoil and a hollow point .41 will put a hurting on most 2 or 4 legged critters.......

Depends what you are worried about having to deal with, I guess. In my opinion, a large-caliber wheelgun is your best bet. Automatics have more parts to screw up, particularly if you're just stashing it away.

.357 or .44 magnum will stop pretty much anything you're likely to come across.

There are two that I carry. A Colt Combat Commander with extra loaded mags. and sometimes my S.A. Ruger .45 Long Colt. They will stop most anything I will come up against. My Fl. concealed permit is recognized in most states that I travel in.

I like that Henry rifle but everyone I found that sells them was out of stock.

I ended up buying the Kel-Tech Sub-2000, but I got it in 9mm rather than .40 because I read that the .40 version has problems, plus I can use my 9mm Glock magazines in it.

It's pretty tiny when folded up, it has a little cam-type key that it comes with that can lock it folded, and it can be unfolded and fired in a couple of seconds. It's remarkably accurate, but it's kind of picky about the ammo you feed it. I tried PMC cartridges and it would fail to eject (stovepipe) every 3-4 rounds. Cheapo Wal-Mart Winchester ammo seems to work best, with no failures at all.

It fits in my trunk or either saddlebag when folded just fine, and I bought a Kel-tec case for it, it's a little foam-padded nylon fabric case that isn't much bigger than the gun when folded.

If you are a decent shot, then any of the Contenders would probably do. They make them in 30-30 and other rifle calibers but they are single shot.

It ain't about the destination - it's all about the journey
