What my line ?

Postby virgilmobile » Wed Nov 02, 2011 12:27 pm

Even though I prefer to use my hands on the bike, this is what I do to earn the funds for my play toys.
Component level diagnostics and repair of communication equipment.
The chip has 64 hand soldered connections, and no,I don't drink.

Interesting. Back when I had a company that produced a couple electronic devices, when we were still in the prototyping stage, we had a woman in Austin TX who would do rework on QFP chips like that for us, under a microscope, freehand.

I've done soldering on stuff like that once or twice, definitely not my forte!

Generally speaking, repair facilities that repair high density PC boards or replace LSI chips will only hire women 21 to 26 years old.The rep told me that they are the only group with steady enough hands.
Boy,talk about a tough market to get into.

They should have a robotic system like surgeons use - reduces your hand movement to microscopic amounts. Of course, I'm sure those things are quite cheap and commonly available.

Oh...by the way, I no longer do electronics as a profession, just a hobby. I've been in computers for many years, in quite a few different industries - mostly systems design, programming, implementation, consulting, that kind of thing.

Curious as to what everyone else does for a living?

Ve get too soon OLT und too late schmart :? . I'm still trying to figure out when I'll be able to retire. :( Anyway, I've been a machinist, a toolmaker, machine builder, wire EDM programmer and operator, and recently been designing stuff using Autodesk Inventor and building assembly automation machines. All for the same company for the last 39 years without a break.

I am a wage slave, working in construction ,Mechanical systems (plumbing ,heating and A/C). The only retiring I have to look forward to is in the spring, when I put new rubber on the bike. Unless I can pick the right 6 numbers in the lottery. No rest for the wicked I guess.
Ride safe, Todd

Hey Virgilmobile post a picture of the soldering iron you use, it's gotta be miroscopic. Maybe post an enlargement too for perspective. I thought all those tiny chips were done by robotics.

Retire? I don't want to.
I am, and will be until I can't do it any more, in the time and attendance business (payroll clocks and software, service and sales). I worked for another company as service manager for 19 years. I was laid off (Owner told me he was closing the business and wanted me to be the first to know). 48 years old, so now what? High school education only but I did know this business and all of the customers on an almost personal basis. I decided to start my own business and proceeded to do exactly that. I started making personal visits to all of (my) customers. When my old employer found out what I was doing he sent out letters to (his) customers saying that he wasn't closing and that I was trying to steal (his) customers. Didn't affect the outcome much though.
Two years later he called me and asked if I wanted to buy what was left of the business. Which I did, just to get what was left of his inventory. The rest is history. That was in 1992. January 2, 2012 will be my 20th anniversary.
When I started out I bought a house on a main street, had a single property zoning change done so I could run the business and live at the same location. The front half of the property is for the business and the back half is where we live. No commuting. All has worked out very well for us.

Many occupations prior to the present one, which is the best job I have ever had and I am really good at it - retirement...

I have been a Millwright, a Diplomat, a Weatherman, a Computer repair person, trained Psychologist, and was in the army long enough to receive a retirement pension. But I am old now ...

The iron, solder were special ordered, not a common tool.Even the smallest tip looks like a center punch under the microscope.
The circuit boards are robotic factory built, after the user breaks it,It's my turn at it.Even the guys at the repair facility won't do this work, they just replace the entire PCB.I do this work because I can and the PCB's I deal with usually cost well above $1000 each. The PBC in the previous post is still used by the consumer but not supported by the manufacturer.Replacement cost for the unit it approaching $1800 each, without the accessories.

So what's the PCB in the picture? It's obviously some kind of RF device.

This unit is a Ericsson LPE 200.
It's a 8 year old 800mhz trunking digital fm handheld transceiver.Used by our local Sheriff,Fire departments, and many chemical plants.I would guess that we have somewhere near 2000 of these still in use in our service area alone.
It's been replaced with RF Harris communications.P5150,p5200,p7200 and now the latest RF-Harris unity xg-100.This little darling will talk to everybody...at a cost.

The parent company used to be GE..then..Ericsson..Com/net Ericsson...Ma/com...Tyco...and now RF Harris.
It's all the same to me.
