Newbie for December

Postby FlaKeysMac » Fri Dec 02, 2011 10:24 am

I have been registered on this site for a while now, but have not posted until now... I am quite interested in obtaining a GL1100 or GL1200 in the near future, probably after the New Year. It is my intent to start touring around central Florida, possibly camping as well. Any tips or hints would be much appreciated.

Welcome to the site! Riding around Florida you're going to be hot, so you might want to look at 1100's or 1200's that have "wind wings" already installed. I'd also go for a shorter windshield instead of a tall Tulsa or Slipstreamer wraparound, to help get cooling air into the cockpit.

Welcome to the site and good luck with your search! Now's the time to buy, at least in the north country, I don't know if bike prices drop in the south during the winter months, but then again someone may need the cash and sell you a bike for a good price.

I'm in Louisiana(Baton Rouge).The bikes selling for $2500.Craigs list..Baton rouge.
1983 gl1100 interstate
1983 gl1100 interstate

Check your local Craig's list.Be aware of the "too good to be true" deals. They usually are.eg.."09 perfect condition for $2800".Yea right.
Average price for a 1100 or 1200 around here starts near $2000 for "some repairs needed" to $4500 for a ready to ride.
The 1500's usually run between $4000 and $7000.
The local honda shop had a 1500 with a little cosmetic problem for $7000,and a couple Valkryie's for $5500-$7000.
Some 1100-1200's can be had under $1500,but they usually need a grand in repairs, that's a DIY price.
I guess it all boils down to what you want to ride, how deep your pockets are,can you wrench on the bike to fix it up.
The bikes your talking about are near 30 years old and the dealer may not want to fool with it.Hell,I can't get my local dealer to admit that they even made the 83 gl1100.

I just did a quick look on Craigs list in the Orlando area,There are at least 10 good buys for the 1100 and 1200's listed there.Worth checking out :)
It's a buyers market.Baton Rouge just listed 5 more decent repairable wings here too.

Thank you sir for the information... If I were any closer to you, I would be quite interested in your bike. I'll start looking around here soon. Gotta sell my truck first for the funds...

Am there,doing that :D .
If you find something worth looking at,post the questions about what trouble spots to look for, like easy visual indicators for problem areas,eg stator wires, sticking suspension, rusting frame, etc.
It's better to kinda know what to expect and not get bamboozled with the sparkles ,then get stuck with a wreck of a bike.

Welcome, I have been to your area and was surprised at the amount(or lack of) ads for used wings. I figured people would retire there and get rid of the bikes as the age creeps up on them. Had better luck in the Ala papers.I also have owned a 1200 and 2 1500 Gold Wings, the stator problems with the 1200 were the worst problem,so graduated to 1500 I think most major problem have had is the LCD readout goes bad, expensive to replace.
