Stator

Postby New Winger » Tue Jan 05, 2010 12:22 pm

on a 1984 Aspencade, the volt meter will not go to 14v untll rpm hits 3200. Is this an indication of stator problems?

That's close to normal. I think my 1100 doesn't show full voltage until around 2500 rpm or so. It's why you need to watch your battery level when spending a lot of time idling - the bike actually draws the battery down while idling.

Like Wingadmin says it takes a lot of RPM's to keep that Battery full. Thats one of the first things I found out about my 1982 A GW. Best to get a battery tender on it after every ride, if just putting around town.
In fact I would like to add two new lights for night driving, but I know I will have to watch the amperage for sure as to what to add into the system.

I did a lot of experimenting when adding lights - I switched my tail/brakelights to LED's, and added two H4 35-watt halogen driving lights to the front. They draw down the battery quickly if sitting at idle, but the bike easily charges the battery with them on when riding normally.

I knew you had did that some time back, and ended up with 35 watt lamps.I just find at night I could use a lot more light.I think the 35s will do the job. Can you ( PN ) me as to what you found out there. Thanks for the help, and No rush.Still a long winter....

I just used a set of cheap driving lights from Wal-Mart, threw out the 55-watt H4's it came with, and replaced them with these instead. Same amount of light, just less current draw.

Ok Thanks, I was wondering, I see sets like that all around town at auto stores too. Thanks again.....
