The rear driveline (driveshaft and rear drive) have splined shafts to connect the rotating parts together. These splined shafts need lubrication with a special high-moly paste lubricant to prevent them from wearing. Without lubricant, the splines themselves will wear away to the point where they can begin to slip, at which point they must be replaced.

Your video just saved me... I thought I had a stuck drive unit (couldn't get the splined portion to come loose to get the rear wheel out). Taking the final drive out gave me the clearance... luckily the drive was just being cantankerous and there is no wear on the splines. Now that the wheel is out, I can get new tires (bought bike used, shop where it was worked on didn't catch the age of the tires - 14 yrs old). Only thing not in your video is pulling the air shock - at least the lower bolt has to be removed to get the drive free (or so it is on my '90 SE). I see that you have the entire shock removed in the video... probably the easiest way.
Thanks for posting it; you really saved me a lot of grief today.

I noticed at about the 55 sec. point that you removed the spacer collar and the washer together as one. On my, and other bikes, the washer is in between the swing arm and the caliper frame. The axle bolt passes through the swing arm, washer, caliper frame, spacer collar, wheel, in that order.

You are 100% correct. What is shown in the video is incorrect.

That's got to be hard on the inner brake pad haivng that washer in the wrong place. Surprised the bracket even went over the rotor that way but maybe someone did some filing in the past.

I do this every time I put a new tire on. You've already got most of what you need to take apart, already apart, so it's not much more work to get to this shaft to lube it up.

everything came apart easy, cleaned the parts, put the grease on but I cannot get the inter splines to go in. did I miss a trick or do I need to apply more pressure?

You don't need to apply more pressure - when it lines up, it just slots right in. The problem is that the front end that it fits into is a universal joint, and it just flops around in there. I find its helpful to put the bike in reverse and quickly engage it to turn the driveshaft while pushing the driveshaft forward. Eventually it slips right into place.

This is a video I took some time ago, with a small "camera on a stick" shoved up the end of the driveshaft tube. I then ran the bike in reverse, so you could see how the universal joint flops around in there:

One of those days, now my reverse is not working. turn on key, "R" on dash lights up and then fades out after a few seconds. neutral light is on put in reverse neutral light goes out but "R" does not come on. going to do some research and see what I a can come up with.
