Preliminary soda blast results

Postby SteveB123 » Fri Oct 05, 2012 6:52 pm

Slapped together a soda blaster, and hit the bulk food store for 10lbs of baking soda.
What fun.
In person, it looks like it should be cooling out of the mould.

This was once a VERY crusty, carboned exhaust port. Still a bit of work to do at the sealing surface.

Even the "oil stain" that was on the lower part of the head cleaned up!

Exhaust's nearly as clean as when they left the factory.

This is good.
Messy, as I have no cabinet, so the system is "total loss" style. Still, baking soda was a buck a pound or so.

Enjoy. I certainly did.

That's the one, brother.

"How to build a soda blaster"
Cut hose-insert airgun-tape-shove hose in soda-pull trigger.

I first saw soda blasting at a building restoration conference nearly 20 years ago. In the demo, they were stripping individual layers of paint off of a Coke can, while holding the can in their hands. Amazing.

....and after a few minutes with the soda.

I have a blaster and have not gotten as good results on the parts I have tried.

How long did it take?

What psi were you using?

Thanx!

Sorry, I didn't time the procedures....."not very long" I guess. Obviously, the heads took a while longer.
Pressure was set at ~80psi.
