I have a 1979 gl1000, what gear oil should I use?

My dad's 82 gl1100 uses valvoline 75w-90 as per this thread:
viewtopic.php?f=11&t=76

is it safe to use on a 79 gl1000?

I know the manual calls for sae 90 over 41 degrees farenheit but I'm curious since I already have 75w-90

Shouldn't be a problem. I use 75W-90 in everything.

Ditto... either 75W90 or 80W90. They are pretty much okay for anything I have. I even use it in my Harley transmission, although it calls for engine oil. If it has gears, I put gear lube in it. If it doesn't run in 110 degree temps, I use 75 or 80 (W90). If it runs in really hot areas, I use 80W130 (or one with similar numbers). All the gear lube I use is synthetic. I do not know if it is better, but I personally feel better using it.
