Battery won't turn starter

Postby Belize » Tue May 12, 2015 7:30 pm

I am having starting problem with my Honda Gold Wing 1991 GL1500A. It starts but runs for a short time then stalls. The battery is well charged. I had a load test done and is good. Yet when you try to start , it won't even spin the starter. If you put the charger on it, it starts immediately

How was the battery load tested. Battery can show 12-13 volt on meter after charging but fall to 8-10 volt when attempting to crank. If bike will crank with charger the battery is shot.

My battery failed last month, 13.7v on charger but 9.4v on meter when attempting to crank. Took out battery and after 5 years only had 1 inch of fluid. Acid boiled off from high output alternator and $50 Walmart battery. Refilled with acid, charged for 24 hours, load tested and it failed to turn over engine. New Gel battery shows 14.3v on volt meter but drops to 12.7 while cranking and it can handle the alternator.

Thank you.
I used a battery load tester. It took the load well . When you put the charger on, it starts immediately and will crank for a few times without the charger .After 3 times starting, or within a few minutes it stops cranking / goes dead ( not even a clicking sound )

Dead cell or cells in battery.

Here is a rule of thumb for battery efficiency.
Battery Life:
Measured in an ‘at rest state’.
Motor off and no charge applied to battery.

12.7 VDC 100%
12.5 VDC 90%
12.4 VDC 80%
12.3 VDC 70%
12.2 VDC 60%
12.0 VDC 50%
11.9 VDC 40%
11.8 VDC 30%
11.6 VDC 20%
11.3 VDC 10%
10.5 VDC 0%

These measurements are with the bike off and nothing attached to the battery. Just disconnect the ground and then measure.

What kind of test is that...... before I went to a AGM I always barely busted 12 on my D&M onboard meter. I just spent 4 hours getting a fully charged PT Cruiser turbo running with high 12 volts until I hit the starter under load.. I went from high 12's to 0 cranking.... Buy a new battery and you can putt around......they go bad faster than a car......that's for sure. Don't over think things unless you did something to drain the battery......never screw with the wiring.

It is a rule of thumb. Hence not always accurate!!!!

Check the battery terminal connections for both cleanliness and tightness.
Hooking up a charger or boosting it might be jiggling the terminals just enough to temporarily make good contact.
