Help opening my Escapade Elite trailer

Postby gto49 » Wed Aug 05, 2015 6:04 pm

I was repairing the tail light wiring on my Elite trailer a few days ago, and had pulled away some of the carpet and disconnected the key-operated latch that opens the lid.

Then later on, I closed the lid to put the trailer outside, forgetting I had disconnected the opener and now of course, I can't open it! So I need some help!
If someone could supply a photo of the latch mechanism, maybe I can get a wire in there to open it somehow... the lid isn't closed all the way, and I'm trying to visualize the latch mechanism. The stationary post is attached to the lid, but I'm trying to get at the moveable latch to push or pull it out of the way.

Any help would be appreciated.

Ron

I've got a master key...

SOME reason pictures will not pass the code.

Yup FM-USA, that would work on most anything, I suspect. I have one similar to that and it would be my "last resort key."
Thanks though.

Thought a little levity might quell any frustrations.

Have you tried similar keys and wiggled'm in and out slowly? Works for me better than 50% of the time.
I have one shed key that opens almost all the pool tables around here.
MOO-HAhahahaha, ONLY the ball doors, never-ever the coin slots, even tho I have a set of those.

I do hope you get it open.

:)

The key isn't the problem. It's the link from the lock mechanism to the latch. I disconnected it to access the tail light wires. Two days later, I forgot about that and closed the lid so I could put the trailer outside (raining a lot lately). Now the lock mechanism turns freely because there is no resistance.

A teeny-weeny wispy kinda guy, like the Genie in the bottle may be able to get in... other than that, no. :(

Almost out of thoughts here....

My 1500 saddlebag latches have a plastic notch latch which have broken. I'm able to meld'm back together with tempered steel embedded for extra strength.

Last resort, drill a hole where the mechanism is then patch it like an access door.

Well, a call to CSC yielded little info. They suggested cutting an access hole through the floor so I can reach in and trip the latch somehow.

That may be what I have to do... :(

Dunno - I think I'd be trying pieces of coat hanger, flat metal, etc. to try to flip the lever before I'd be cutting any holes.

Another thought would be to go to a lock & safe place, and have a look at their locks. Obviously, the trailer manufacturer doesn't make their own locks, so they buy commercially available ones. Have a look at the lock shop, and try to find one the same as yours. If you ask the locksmiths, they'll explain ways of getting it open. If worst comes to worst, drag the trailer itself to the locksmith shop. They'll get it open, probably in 60 seconds...for a lot less hassle than cutting & patching holes!

Also - if you can post a picture here of the lock (try to open the lid as far as you can & get as clear a picture as possible of what's inside the lid) you'll probably get more constructive suggestions...

Plan that access hole, turn it into a wet garbage storage?
Valuables safe box?
Other thoughts anyone?

I think the hole is probably the only way in. Using a good hole drilling attachment, you may be able to do it neatly enough that you can replace the plug in the hole and fiberglas resin it back in place with minimal damage to the trailer. Good Luck.
It ain't about the destination - it's all about the journey

I'm happy to report that my trailer is open, thanks to a locksmith in England, a bit of technology, and a lot of patience walking through the solution. It required drilling a small 3/16" diameter hole in an unobtrusive location.

If you need some help in this regards, message me and I can give you a description of what to do. I tried to attach a photo, but I keep getting an error.

Yuppers! Working on it now! It will be a lot simpler than what I did too.

By the way, do you have an Elite? Just need confirmation of something.

No Elite.
Sounds like you got some good advise from that locksmith.

I'm building up a rather large convertible trailer, my target is under 500# Net-Wt. without the use of exotic materials.
It'll be full self contained for behind the Wing. You've seen them 'Tiny House' projects?...similar but radically different.
So far it looks really promising, the drag coefficient is about .4, wind tunnel design test. That's extremely low considering what's out there.
Also the shape lends itself to not being controlled by side winds, a HUGE plus since we only have 2 wheels.
For it in my (everything weighs near-nothing) collections, I have metal coat hooks that weigh less than a sheet of typing paper and cast aluminum grab handles that weigh less than a cheap glass shot glass.
Set-up it may have either a loft or possibly a second story. Odd sounding, AY!

Sounds like an interesting trailer you're working on. Is it like a teardrop?

I asked if you have an Elite because of something I found when I finally got mine open. After all the "help" I got from CSC telling me to cut a hole either in the bottom, through the spare tire wheel well (preferred), or behind the license plate (risk of damaging the air lines to the adjustable shocks), big enough to put my arm in, I found a very easy method that seems to be there from the factory. The locksmith in England confirmed my suspicion because his Elite has the same "feature."

That's great when things are built similar, problems like yours are a whole lot easier to remedy.
My trailer is technically not a Teardrop but it's in that realm.

Someone I talked to about a year ago of my design went and built near exact as mine. Tho there is a difference, I can pull mine behind a motorcycle, pulling his would be suicide. I'm not to happy about it but I didn't copy-write my design. I just wish I had the funds to get mine together right now, not when/if I get it.

I've been kicking the shape around since the mid 1970's and only now people would accept it, it is that different.
OODLES of space in a lightweight and compact package. MMM-Mmm-mmmmmm.

I'm not incorporating any of these designs but I love the ideas behind it all.
Video is just a bit slow but it will keep you watching.

And here

KD furniture also intrigues me but it's heavy so it's good for a real home.
