Older Than Dirt Quiz

Postby petesgoldwing » Sat Dec 20, 2014 11:42 am

Older Than Dirt Quiz :
Count all the ones that you remember not the ones you were told about. Ratings at the bottom.

1. Blackjack chewing gum
2. Wax Coke-shaped bottles with colored sugar water
3. Candy cigarettes
4. Soda pop machines that dispensed glass bottles
5. Coffee shops or diners with tableside juke boxes
6. Home milk delivery in glass bottles with cardboard stoppers
7. Party lines on the telephone
8 Newsreels before the movie
9. P.F. Flyers
10. Butch wax
11.. TV test patterns that came on at night after the last show and were there until TV shows started again in the morning. (there were only 3 channels... [if you were fortunate])
12. Peashooters
13. Howdy Doody
14. 45 RPM records
15. S& H green stamps
16. Hi-fi's

20. Packards
21. Roller skate keys
22. Cork popguns
23. Drive-ins
24. Studebakers
25. Wash tub wringers

If you remembered 0-5 = You're still young
If you remembered 6-10 = You are getting older
If you remembered 11-15 = Don't tell your age,
If you remembered 16-25 = You' re older than dirt!

I might be older than dirt but those memories are some of the best parts of my life.

Wow! The only one I didn't experience was the S&H green stamps (they weren't around in this part of the world), although I was aware of them as a kid.

I think I predate dirt, from back when dirt was still sedimentary rock deposits...

Guilty as charged and damned proud of it. I feel I am lucky to even be above the dirt with where I have been and what I have seen. As a Canuck, I have not experienced Butch Wax or S&H Green stamps, but that may be because they are U.S. only memories. Sixty six years young last month.

I remember way more test patterns than that as my Dad got interested in televisions, and built his own antenna, and would sit up nights and see how many channels he could bring in. He gave my, way later, in-laws their first TV. He was very good at fixing broken televisions. Almost 70 myself.

I remember every one of them. I could probably add a few more nostalgic entries as well. I remember my mother saving and licking all those S & H green stamps into the booklets and a few times trading them in at the store that was a good drive away. I remember when FM radio finally was broadcast, I think I could get 2 stations. A lot has happened in my 55 years, I just wish I could find a way to see what another 55 years could bring (and still be able to understand and enjoy it!) Here's hoping for early spring.

If you add water, does that make me mud? You bet! I do not mind admitting that I am older than dirt - and I like looking at the flowers, rather than making them.

I am just thankful I grew up in that time frame. Life was different and we enjoyed it! I am not sure kids today have as much fun.

hey listen, kids today wouldn't know what to do without their cell phones, iPods, iPads, laptops, notebooks etc. vinyl records and micro cassettes? what's those? they would look at you in bewilderment and call you "old". remember when we used to use a pencil and paper lol? and we got in trouble when we tried to sneak in our pocket calculator (Texas instruments, remember those?) for math. today's kids have it too easy. they should try to use what we had for a week or 2, THEN they might understand how it was when WE were growing up.

Not to hijack the thread, but I also remember we used to put a sign in the window for the iceman so he could tell from the street how many lbs of ice we needed for our icebox.

When the ice man cometh, was it with a horse and cart? Same with the baker, milkman, and garbage. This was in a suburban area, and there was a set of draught horses that would be the 'horsepower' for general deliveries. My uncle used to have an egg and butter round, with a horse and cart, where he would deliver these items, in bulk, to some shops.

Gone are the days when we would play cricket in the street, until the light faded.

my grandparents were Russian immigrants that came to this country just before the turn of the 20th century (1890), where my grandfather went to work in the Waltham watch company in Trenton NJ before opening up a small grocery store, (1910) where they both worked at it until they retired in 1981, so im sure it was in a horse drawn cart among with his other products that he sold in their store.
