Well Sally.. .. .. (Way-back machine. Date, very late 1990's)
I was kicking around this idea with my pool buds.

Somewhere in the heart of America start a town and built it and run it like our past that we all remember. Not exactly like Mayberry but darn close. Beginner homes and businesses would be built and hopefully continue to flourish and expand. In time more & more people get wind of this and move in.

Always growing and expanding but never-ever expanding to far away from the Mayberry type storefronts. For if it got that large of a little town a new set of store fronts would spring up and new homes build around said stores, continuing on & on. After a while there would be many Mom & Pop store oases. All this keeps the walking and riding distance to "X" at a fair minimum.
It would be a place(s) where people know each other, care about each other and actually talk to one another in the shops, on the streets and parks. No Big Box stores just local folks selling local, reasonably local and ordered merchandise. If folks need mass quantities or low quality items they'd have to drive to Raleigh... (ahem) way-way-WAY down the road a good piece. But I think if others noticed you bought said discount store items you may be frowned upon in your town for you are not helping to keep your neighbors in business.
Folks would have there own little woodworking, sewing, etc. businesses at home or quaint designated industrial areas near where they live. NEVER having to travel very far to get to work. Summertime could see working folks riding there bicycles to said jobs. All traveling is within reasonable short distances. No city congestion, masses vehicles getting to "X" in a hurry etc.
Monetarily speaking. Taxes, cost of living, etc. would have caps. There could never be runaway inflation, just normal, reasonable slow inflation.
"Why back in the day", it was unheard of to have more than .025% rise in bread, milk, cars, coff... (YEEEeeeeawn.. darn, dreaming again. )

Our discussion group said it couldn't happen, too much modern progress, just can't go back. Electronics, airplanes, commuting to distant state counties, etc., etc.. I don't see why not, all those types of things can be planned for. After all, we have oodles of practice of what works and what doesn't.
Just need a place to start.
