I started playing the guitar again

Postby spiralout » Sat Apr 09, 2016 1:10 am

I started playing guitar again a few months ago after a 20+ year break (read that as now that the wife's gone ;)). I've been messing around some lately using PC amp simulators since I was never a die hard tube amp guy, anyway. You can get some amazing tones nowadays using nothing but an instrument interface and a PC and it's thousands cheaper $$$$$
The only recording I ever did back in the day was a few songs on an old Tascam cheapo 4 track that sucked. Times have changed and there're PC DAWs that smoke that little old Tascam so I'm starting to record some now, too, as I figure out how to use them. The one I'm using is so complicated it makes Photoshop look simple
Anyway, here's a few solos I've recorded using either Cubase or Ableton Live DAW (can't remember which I was using at the time), Guitar Rig 5 and an Ibanez RG3XXV and a PRS. Both have double humbuckers but I still can still get a Stratty tone with the software. These are more testing for the tone than the quality of playing but they're not too awful bad, imo. Enjoy.
First is one of my all time favorite solos, Time from Dark Side of the Moon https://soundcloud.com/user-74196704/time-solo-tone-test
Mother, from The Wall https://soundcloud.com/user-74196704/mother-solo-test-tone
!st solo in Comfortably Numb from The Wall https://soundcloud.com/user-74196704/comfortably-numb-1st-solo-tone
2nd solo in Comfortably Numb https://soundcloud.com/user-74196704/comfortably-numb-solo-tone-test
...and to prove I play other stuff besides David Gilmour, the 1st solo in Orion on Master of Puppets by Metallic https://soundcloud.com/user-74196704/orion-test-2

Hey Spiralout,

That's pretty darn good for such a long hiatus. Could never bend my fingers the right ways. I tried to play bass guitar back in high school, and then played a little percussion. Basically... I pretty much sucked at both , but I could sing. Never ran with the band though. David Gilmore and Roger waters were my heroes. Probably still my favorites. I always liked the guitars from the Outlaws also.

Green Grass and High Tides to you,

BTW my 18 yr old started playing guitar last year, and getting better all the time. :D

Thanks. I've been playing again for about 6 months now and I picked it back up pretty quickly but I've gotten back to the point I was at so many years ago and no better no matter how much I practice. I'm realizing now I'll never be able to play like Gilmour or SRV
Hope your son sticks with it
