Goldwing GL1500 LED Day Running Light

Postby seeberluca » Sun Sep 23, 2012 10:04 am

I just mount on my GL 1500 se the Goldwing GL1500 LED Day Running Light from Big Bike Parts .

Well, my personal opinion is that this led gives to the bike a nice look and a safety plus.
The grille is designed to replace the OEM one: it is very easy to mount it ( plug and play)
I followed the HOW TO post in this forum ( the one: how to replace a headlight bulb) and the instructions coming with the led grill: one more step you have to do is just removing the right fairing pocket.

I put one of those on my GL1500 early this summer, after seeing one on a GL1500 and thinking, "that looks nice."

However, it has a design flaw in the driver circuitry, in that it is very sensitive to voltage spikes. After having it on my bike for a week or so, I noticed that the second LED from the left end had burned out. I took it back to Cyclemax, and Gary there swapped it for a new one. He mentioned that he had received another one back from another customer with the same problem.

I put the new one on my bike - and within a week, the exact same LED had burned out again.

I got yet another one from Gary. This time I put it on a filtered 13.8 volt power supply in my basement, and left it running for a few weeks, to confirm what I suspected, that it was a voltage spike causing the problem, and not that the LEDs themselves were defective. It worked perfectly, no LEDs burning out. I did notice however, that when I turned the unit off, and as the voltage from the power supply dropped to zero over the course of a second or so, all of the LEDs would go out quickly, except for the two on the end. Those two would stay on for a few seconds longer than the rest - and one of those two is the one that kept burning out.

I suspect that there is insufficient filtering or regulation of the current going to the two LEDs on the end, and as a result, any transient voltage pulse on your bike's system bus will burn out the LEDs in question. In my case, I have the GoldwingHIDs HID headlights. Their ballasts briefly draw a large amount of current when they are initially switched on, and I suspect as my Compufire alternator's regulator adjusts for the sudden draw, there is a very small voltage spike. I hooked up my oscilloscope to my bike to watch for this pulse, and I did see one - immediately after turning on the HID headlights, the bus voltage spiked from 13.8 to around 20 volts or so - but only for a few microseconds before it was clamped down. Apparently with the insufficient regulation in these LED lights, this tiny spike is enough to burn out one or two of the LEDs on the end.

To compensate, I put a 7812 regulator and an electrolytic capacitor inline with the new LED, to filter and regulate the voltage it was receiving. I have had it in my bike now for several weeks, and it is working just fine, with no LEDs burned out. This is probably something they should look at doing with the thing itself.

I do like the light, it looks good, it gives a good bit of light out in a fairly wide arc - not enough to light up the road, but enough to help "be seen" by others on the road. If you have HID lights, I would not recommend it, however, as you will likely end up with burned out LEDs like I experienced.

Ok, then..."Ooooooooooo, not so nice", I will wait them just a little.

By the way, ordered pieces from CycleMax, they are probably wondering why WA State is ordering from them ;)

Thanks for the advise,
since now I did not have any problem.
I got it after I saw a friend of mine led grille.
The once I got has just something different in the wires than the friend of mine one.
He has just the wires and the connectors ( you have to plug them into the green two pins connector inside the right fairing pocket) in mine there is a special cover for the wires with inside something, I'm not able to find out what could be ( I do not wanto to check) : may be a voltage filter?
Anyway I will update this post

Not at all - if you don't have aftermarket things (i.e. HID lights) that draw lots of current at start-up or otherwise put surges/spikes on your power, then you will very likely never have a problem with these lights. I just wanted to relate my experiences.

Cyclemax ships worldwide, so I'm pretty sure they don't even blink at shipping to Washington.

8-) Remember WingAdmin is always right.
The second led he was talking about went out just yesterday.
Now I contacted BIG BIKES PARt reporting the problem and how the Admin solved it.
This is the fisrt answer
Luca,
Thank you for the feedback. I have passed this information onto our Research and Development Department for further review. Can you please tell me which dealer these were purchased from and when?

Oh, I know Cyclemax ships to WA, my first box from them should be showing up Monday. And now I will say "Oooooooooooooooooo, so nice", I am back with it on my next order. Ya know, I do not know if I do have HID, I will have to check for sure.

New update:
this morning the burned led went back to life :? I drove for 200 km in the night still alive; I don't know what is going to happen for sure something not correct is going on. Bike parts is working on the problem ( they asked where and how the led grille has been wired ) :!:

Yup...I had the same thing happen. It came back to life a couple times before dying permanently.

Next step
if you drive in the rain several leds will go out. Back in dry condition after a while all of them will come up again :?

Interesting - I've been through a fair bit of rain with mine, and didn't notice any problems like that.

New update:

After the last time with all of the "leds" up Now I have a the status: two up and one down, two up and one down and so on.
The silly thing is that the second led from the left, who was the first to have problems, is now always up :ugeek:
