Battery Tender USB Charger and 12 volt Socket

Postby WingAdmin » Wed Apr 30, 2014 8:02 pm

For those of us with Battery Tenders on our motorcycles (and it really should be you too, if you want your expensive battery to last for years!), you know there is a little pigtail connector that hangs out somewhere. The other end is connected to your battery, and when you park your bike, you plug your Battery Tender into this little connector. When you ride, this little connector is hidden away somewhere. On my GL1500, it hides inside one of the rear trunk-mounted cubbies. It's not used while riding, obviously.

Someone pointed this product out to me, and I thought it was a great idea. Why not make use of that unused connector? In this case, it's a small USB charger that plugs into the Battery Tender connector on the bike when away from home. You can use it to charge your phone, or any other device that charges from a USB connection:

Available from Amazon for only $12, I decided to pick one up. It works great! Just plug it in, plug your phone wire into it, stash the phone, and when you finish your ride, the phone is ready to go!

They also have a standard "cigarette lighter" plug type connector, which allows you plug any 12 volt appliance into your Battery Tender wire, and run it from your bike's battery:

This one is also available from Amazon, for $8.

Both work quite well, and can easily be thrown in a trunk or a storage pocket when not in use.

I love this tip! I just need to decide which route I want to go (USB or cigarette lighter) and get it ordered. I use my phone to play my music through my BlueTooth headset and this will take the worry out of running my phone battery down too much on long rides. (Always want to have enough battery left in case of an emergency!) Thanks for the great tip!!!!

Thanks WingAdmin for another great tip! I also use my iphone for music while I ride and invariably run the battery in the phone down. Now this doesn't have to happen. I just have to move the Battery Tender pigtail to another location. It is currently in the faux-tank next to the gas cap. It is probably a little warm in there for a phone, I'll move it up to the fairing. Thanks again!

My connector is just under the right side of the passenger seat. Good idea to relocate to the right side storage and get this. Hmmmm, another purchase.

Been using the cigarette socket set up on my trikes for a couple years.

Thing you have to remember is it is unswitched so you have to remember to disconnect whatever it is you're charging, be it a cellphone, MP3 player or GF's curling iron, at the end of the ride. Is especially true if you're gonna be couple of days between rides.

Update to my previous post.

I decided to go with the USB. My battery tender connection is located in one of the trunk mount cubbies and so my phone and the USB cable fits right in there as well. Went for a weekend getaway on the bikes this past weekend. When we arrived at the designation (5 hours later) my phone still had a full charge. On the way back thanks to rain and complications the return trip was 8 hours, but my phone was dry and still had a full charge.

The complication mentioned: Hubby bumped his windshield while mounting up, cracking it at the base. Then a few miles down the road before we could reach a store to buy duct tape or packing tape, the wind tore the windshield off and it flew in his face, splitting his chin. It could have been much worse. Tip from this experience: If this happens to you, just break the damn windshield off. It is not worth trying to salvage it for the ride back!

I found this post and decided to check into it further.
I found an eBay seller with a store that has these for less than $10 with free shipping.
http://stores.ebay.com/2xPowerCo_Battery-Tender-Accessories_W0QQLHQ5fSellerWithStoreZ1QQLHQ5fTitleDescZ1QQ_fsubZ5340416010QQ_sasiZ1QQ_sidZ720180700QQ_trksidZp4634Q2ec0Q2em322

They even have one that is a voltage display.

It's never too late to have a happy childhood!
