Seal Mate fork seal cleaning tool for removing dirt from fork seals

Postby thunderwing » Tue Sep 06, 2016 2:05 pm

Well, just did my fork seals and got a leak on one side, so before tearing down the front end of the bike again to do the seal on one side I figure this tool is the last ditch effort.

Seems like it works for a lot of people, my feeling is that for $5.00 how could I not give this a try. It's more than likely dirt that is the culprit as I seated the seal correctly and took my time.

Here's a youtube link to the tool.

I will use this tool periodicallyto clean the seals so I don't have to go thru fork seal replacement in the near future.

Here's a youtube video link, it just makes sense to do this:

I have made my own out of an empty 2 L soda bottle, following the design of the above SealMate traced onto the bottle.
Just make sure you sand down any rough edges after cutting it out. Works great! ;)

After doing a full fork seal replacement I just want to be finished with it, and having a leak on one fork is knawing at me, so I pray this seal mate fixes the problem.....otherwise it's back to yanking the right fork out of the triple tree and replace and rebuild yet again.

Glad to hear that it's worked for you, did you use it for cleaning the seal or did you have a leak....if you had a leak how bad was it before you fixed it with seal mate/your own tool based on seal mate?

I rebuilt my forks back in April, 2001 and have put on 189,000 KM/ 118,200 mi since then. (Bike now has just under 310,000 km)
I occasionally (3 times since rebuild) get a slight weep from one seal, or the other, so I lift up the dust cap, use the 'SealMate' tool I made, to clean around the seal, depress the front end up and down a few times, replace dust cap and clean it like the seals and things have been fine. :ugeek:

Glad to hear that this tool works. Will post my results when it comes in the mail. I can tell you you that when the postman delivers it it will be immediately put to use!!! due in this thursday or friday.

Thank you for posting your results with the tool.

This ought to be an essential tool in the on board tool kit as far as I'm concerned.

Best,

Scott

I've fixed at least one other bike with the Seal Mate tool - definitely worth the 5 bucks!!!
