Scotchlite reflective tape

Postby WingAdmin » Tue Dec 13, 2011 12:56 pm

The back end of my wife's bike is woefully dark - the bike itself is black, and it has only one tiny brake light to let people behind her know that she's there. She did not want bright red reflective safety tape covering her back end, so I came up with this idea: black reflective tape.

Image

It can be purchased from many vendors, in cut-down packages such as above (which I bought on Amazon), or directly from 3M, the manufacturer: 3M Scotchlite Reflective Tape. While I used black tape to match my wife's motorcycle, they have colors that will match most bikes.

Looking at the tape, it is in fact glossy and black, and gives no indication as to its true purpose. It matches the glossy black paint on the trunk of my wife's motorcycle perfectly. I cut several strips and stuck them in place. Later, I had to show her just where I had stuck them, because it's not obvious unless you know where to look.

However, in the dark, when you shine a light on the tape, it lights up bright white:

In the glow of a car's headlights from ten or more feet back, the back of her motorcycle now lights up with large, bright white glowing strips. Perfect!

The tape is made by 3M, so you don't need to worry about it peeling off due to cheap adhesive. For less than $20, you can add this invisible tape that adds a massive amount of nighttime visibility.

Invisible decoupage.I love it.You could get really creative on designs too.How about a wing emblem traced on the back and then cut out with an exacto knife?

The problem with posting links to specific eBay auctions is that in a couple months when someone comes looking through this thread, those links are long-dead.

Better to post links to searches, for instance:

Does anyone know if this tape comes in a color that would match a 1995 red wing? I dropped it, and the left mirror got scratched - a spot about the size of a quarter.

BMW has tape kits for their bikes, the reflector sections are huge. I didn't know we had it until I took some pics at night. The entire back of the bike was reflective. Couldn't see a thing during the day.

I've had the black reflective 3M tape on the FRONT of my '83 Chevy truck for about 15yrs. Still like new, no chipping, peeling, fading. Bugs, rocks, birds leave no marks.
