Complete Brake rebuild parts for 83 GL1100I

Postby sleepy3103 » Fri Sep 26, 2014 8:13 am

So I was just going to rebuild my rear master cylinder because it has the nice brake dragging then locking up problem everyone has. I bought a K&L rear master cylinder rebuild kit from partsnmore. I ordered EBC Double H sintered pads. I pulled the front calipers off and installed the new pads after cleaning them up good. When I compressed the pistons they where a lot harder then they should have been, like harder than my Buick park avenue that has 230,000 miles on it. So instead of just replacing the pads and rebuilding the master cylinder, I'm rebuilding everything and Installing HEL Braided stainless steel brake lines.

The brake lines and the rebuild will be for another post. For this post I wanted to share some part info I gathered for people with 83s while looking for my parts. Mainly because I found its a little cheaper to order all the Honda OEM parts from partzilla, then ordering the kits. It is a little more work to sort out stuff, but its a bit cheaper and all OEM Honda parts. The other reason I looked at partzilla was because I saw a few posts where people where getting the wrong size seals and dust seals for the rear caliper from partsnmore.

After finding all the parts I need, I made a list to help people out and so I could sort out the parts quicker when they got here. I'm glad I did because they came in individual bags for each piece and are not sorted. Partzillas shipping is super fast though, I ordered on a Monday and had the parts on Wednesday. I looked for all the parts from other vendors to compare pricing. This list is what I saw when I was checking, It may very depending on when you look the parts up.

Sleepy,

Want to thank you for your research, and thank wingadmin for putting this in the reference section.

I need to do exactly what you've done, rebuild the whole brake system. I just did fork seals, put new brakes on and low and behold the linked brake system won't bleed out correctly and the calipers are hanging up......so that means the master cylinder has dirt in it, the calipers were slimy and dirty with filthy fluid and the system was held together with dirt.....so back to the bench and rebuild the system and yes, get braided lines as well that way there was nothing left of the old dirty system.

THANK YOU!!!

Best,

Scott
