GL1500SE 1995 LCD Display

Postby Jose Fuste » Mon Feb 23, 2015 9:41 pm

As you probably know, the LCD Display in the 1500 fails quite often. The replacement part for all models up to 1997 was 37130-MT8-771. This part is discontinued.
If you look for a used display on EBay or other sources, the search is futile. None available,or if you find one , it may be years old and the asking price can be $400 or more.
Faced with that ,we decided to purchase a new LCD Display with a different part number for models 1998-2000 . The part number is 37130-MAM-T01.
The new version of the display looks exactly the same as the old one- same plugs, similar wiring. However the electronic green board is different.
Guess what!!! The new design works perfectly when installed in the 1995 SE.
Took the risk of purchasing the newer part against all odds and against the dealer's advice to find that the new design works like a charm in the older bike.
Nowhere in the Honda parts list or parts publications there is an indication that bthe parts are interchangeable.
I share this , because it is cool to see a well kept 1995 SE previously without an operable display ,return to full display life with the new unit designed supposedly only for the 1998 to 2000 SE models. Go figure!!

GREAT info - thanks very much for sharing! I haven't been able to find that information anywhere, and don't think anyone else has tried it. Lots of 1500's around '96-'97 have LCD problems (mine included) and it's great to know there's actually an option!

That's great news. Honda doesn't say why things get new part numbers. It could be that they are redesigned and totally incompatible with the previous version of the part, or it could be that the part is functionally identical and just sourced from a different vendor. Thanks for biting the bullet and taking the risk!

Hey Jose, how much did you pay for the new unit? US$ will do. Thanks.

Jose, is the LCD still working fine? I'm about to order one for my 1994 and am hoping it will fit it as well. Thanks.

Maybe I missed it or maybe you did not say, did you have to change any plugs or anything like that ? I have NOT seen the board outof the dash, so not 100% sure how it goes in or wires up.

I just replaced the LCD display on my 1996 GL1500SE with the one that Jose described. It was a perfect plug and play and fit perfectly! The wiring is exactly the same, lengths of wires and connectors. The back of the circuit board looks a little different, (same physical size) but that is due to new electronic components used, different size and shape. Everything functions the same as the original. I bought mine from Partzilla for $375 and was it delivered in about 5 days. The unit (one complete assembly) included both the temperature and fuel gages and the bulb just below the display. I had to take the dash off the bike, remove both the speedometer and tachometer, very easy, and pull the old one out, then slip the new one in. I used the article on changing to LED bulbs as a guide and it explained everything to a "T".

Great fix and now I have the full display again.

I'm assuming I'm going to have to replace mine at some point - I should probably buy one now as insurance. Mine is faint - the numbers aren't clear black like they should be, they're more grey - and harder to read at night.

This thread should be moved to the reference section, imo. Thanks for the info, Jose.

Just installed the newer 37130-MAM-T01 on my 1995 and it works perfectly. The color appears to be a little different but it looks and performs great. A few of notes for those who make the change:

1) Be very careful when removing the black instrument panel face because the colored indicator lenses (small squares) fall out very easily and if they fall into the black hole of the cycle are hard to recover. I had to use compressed air to flush a few out. So keep them facing up!

2) If purchased through Partzilla the part comes out of a dealer in Alabama I believe. If you google that part number that Honda dealer comes up at the same price so you may save some time as Partzilla is very slow to ship.

3) If you haven't disassembled the dash before, follow the instructions posted in the How To, it will save you some grief, especially with the vents.

When I changed my display, I removed the entire dash and brought it to the kitchen table. I was then able to safely disassemble the front bezel without dropping the colored tiles used for some of the indicator lights. Once apart, I cleaned the bezel and replaced all the bulbs since it was apart. There are 17 bulbs but one came with the new LCD display. It was amazing how much brighter the entire dash was and still keeping the original look.

For all whom are interested, all renditions of the LCD are obsolete. All numbers for 2000 back including the latest number of 37130 mam a81 are gone. If anyone has differing information please feel free to forward it. I spent several days researching it and taking to several dealers and online to find out this part is just plain gone.

Seems you are correct. Partzilla and Southern Honda show the newer unit at a higher price and out of stock. The older unit is no longer available as well. I wonder what happened ? I just bought mine earlier in the month. Hopefully they will restock for those who didn't buy in time.

Hello! I thought I would weigh in with my own experience regarding the compatibility of the various years' LCD displays. I bought a 1988 GL 1500 a couple of months ago. The LCD display was trashed. After doing much research including reading this thread, I took a gamble and bought a used LCD display from a 1999 GL 1500 on eBay for $190. The ad showed a video with it working properly. I actually bought the entire dash and gauges.

The 1999 LCD display works perfectly on my 1988 Goldwing. The connectors are all the same. I simply changed out the display, control board, and connectors (I also replaced the bulbs too).

I really appreciate all the experience from this forum! It has helped me tremendously in getting my Goldwing back into shape.

Thanks to everyone! :)

Doug
