Im on 3 weeks holiday, I am going for a ride

Postby RoadRogue » Fri Jun 08, 2012 11:22 pm

I have had it with work for now. I have booked 3 weeks off. My brother and I are going for our 3rd annual ride together. He lives 1000 kms from me ,so I will leave home in a day or so and head out to meet up with him to start our ride together. The route I have picked out to get there is over 2200kms. I will be covering as much new territory as I can to get where I am going , I am not in a hurry. I will be dragging the tent trailer behind me so I can stopp where I want when I want for the night and always have a comfortable bed to sleep in.

I have been rewiring the tent trailer for a couple of evenings now and have included a couple of interesting features. I found a 12volt electric blanket so that when I am camping if it gets a little too cool I can just plug it in and take the chill off the bed (the Mrs. isnt traveling with me this time). I have a group 24 RV deep cycle battery wired into the trailer to supply power . I didnt want the blanket to be turned on all night long so I wired in a mechanical bathroom timer (upto 1 hour).Interior white LED lights , 12 volt to 19 volt power supply to power the laptop, 12 volt to 5 volt for charging USB devices (cell phone, Cardo Scala ,etc) . I am also working on a 12 volt water pump/copper coil for the camp fire so I can take a hot shower while camping in the middle of nowhere. Ya ,I like to be comfortable when I rough it.

I have a goal of at least 10,000 kms for this trip, I will probably ride closer to 15,000kms or 9000miles. I will try to post here from time to time with a pic or two of the map of where my front wheel leads me to over the next 3 weeks. 8-)

Ride safe, Todd

Let me know if you come anywhere near Seattle, we don't have a lot of room, but would be happy to put you guys up or let you stay in our RV, or help with any mechanical issues.. :D

Hi Littlebeaver, keep that missile clearly aimed away from Seattle!!

I lost my job in November last year and accepted a new job here in Seattle in December.. Just wanted to live somewhere else (Have lived in England, France, Germany, California, Texas and now Washington state). and this seemed like a good oppertunity.. Truth is that I was not ready for the large amounts of rain and cold that they have here, so whilst we love the scenery, I would probably jump at a chance to move south to the warmth. My wife and I loved Texas and we have a plan to move back there in 5 years time, but until then I will try to enjoy this area, it's beautiful and the bike riding is great, just want a bit more warmth and sunshine!!

Hope all is well down south!! :D

We're on vacation too starting Thursday for a couple of weeks. Thinking of pointing the bike south and heading toward Utah and see how far we get.

CBX are you also towing a trailer? Are there a lot of camp sites in Canada? there's alot of KOA's in the States I just wonder because I have never rode up into Canada before..It's gotta be pretty up there, I may never want to come back to hell on Earth [Texas] I'm dark skinned as it is, but going to the coast man,,, well you wouldn't believe the tan line I have at my feet, I wear those deck shoes all the time, it's funny..Major change in skin tone at my feet...What are the roads like in Canada? Mostly two lane or 4 lane..? Are there gas station sites in large numbers not too far apart?

No trailer for me. Wife isn't interested in camping and I'm kinda on the same page. At the end of the day a bath, beer and bed suits us.

As to Canada. Well believe it or not, we're pretty modern up here. 2 and 4 lane roads, lots of campsites and gas whenever you want it. We just don't talk funny like you Texans, at least not to us, LOL. Ya gotta come here man. The Rocky Mountains are to die for.

Here's some teaser picts:

Im here, still at home for a day or so. Still doing a little work on the bike and trailer. I will hit the road on Monday.

What the hell do you mean by asking if we have enough gas stations? how far north do you plan on riding?North of 60* you might have to plan your fuel carefully but south of that you are good to go.When riding in unfamiliar areas I usually carry a couple of gallons of fuel in the trailer just in case. Only ever had to use it for my self once. Up here in Canada we have everything you have in the south except the very high temps. Although it does get up over 100 degrees during the summer in several areas of the country. Its not all ice and snow here all the time. There are as many camp grounds as you could ever want, from KOA type RV sites to mom and pop run sites to a nice pull out on a quiet back road near a lake/river. What ever your style is we have it up here too. Come on up and I will give you a personal tour of the western portion of the country. 8-)

By the way I dont usually get online till the evening, I am usually busy working on projects till 9PM or so. Unlike alot of you that start your day with a cup of coffee and the computer fired up. I am not a morning person at all.
Ride safe, Todd

Todd. Where are you actually headed??

I envy you there in Castlegar. Love BC> Do a trip on the dual sport there every September. Rode the Kettle Valley a couple of years ago.

Not to jack the thread and I hope Todd doesn't mind being a fellow Canuck. Just got this in an email and it puts it all in perspective LOL. Little edit by me. Did you spot it "LittleBeaver"??

A photographer on vacation in San Antonio, Texas was inside a church taking photographs when he noticed a golden telephone mounted on the wall with a sign that read '$10,000 per call'.

The American, being intrigued, asked a priest who was strolling by what the telephone was used for.

The priest replied that it was a direct line to heaven and that for $10,000 you could talk to God.

The American thanked the priest and went along his way.

Next stop was in Atlanta. There, at a very large cathedral, he saw the same golden telephone with the same sign under it.

He wondered if this was the same kind of telephone he saw in San Antonio and he asked a nearby nun what its purpose was.

She told him that it was a direct line to heaven and that for $10,000 he could talk to God.

'O.K., thank you,' said the American.

He then traveled to Indianapolis, Washington, Philadelphia, Boston, and New York.

In every church he saw the same golden telephone with the same '$10,000 per call' sign under it.

The American, upon leaving Vermont decided to travel up to Canada to see if Canadians had the same phone.

He arrived in Canada, and again, in the first church he entered, there was the same golden telephone, but this time the sign under it read '50 cents per call.'

The American was surprised so he asked the priest about the sign. 'Father, I've traveled all over America and I've seen this same golden telephone in many churches. I'm told that it is a direct line to heaven, but in the USA the price was $10,000 per call. Why is it so cheap here?'

The priest smiled and answered, 'You're in Canada now, son ... it's a local call.'

Ok kids I have been out on the road for 5 days to get to my brothers place that should have taken me 11hrs to ride to. He lives 1000km from me, I must have taken a wrong turn somewhere because my odometer says it took me 3000km to get here. When I can find a mapthat shows both BC and alberta on the same page I will post a pic of the route I took. until then you will have to get out your own map and follow along your self.

I left Castlegar east on hyw3 north on 22 till Banff up the Icefield Parkway (holy crap those are impressive mountains) to Hinton up hwy40 to Grande Prairie over to Dawson creek,Ft st John, Chetwyn,Tumbler Ridge, DawsonCreek across and up to Peace River,Slave Lake , Athabasca and currently sitting in Edmonton for a couple of days before heading out to Vancouver Island.

Here is a pic of the new tent trailer set up for one of the nights on the road next to a nice but muddy river just outside of Tumbler Ridge BC

More pics later, I have to resize all of them to fit here or Wingadmin will skin me alive for using up all the bandwidth for my pics. I have lots of them so I will have to choose carefully ( no shower pics I promise). The trailer pulls along like its not even there. I have seen Bears,Moose, Deer and a Beaver all on my road, some were quick to get out of the way others were in no hurry at all. So far no road kill for dinner.8-)

No worries - the system will resize huge pictures for you if you upload them. :)

Did you use your horn to encourage the natives to clear the road, or do they do it on their own? My experience, bears take off as soon as they see you, moose just stand there and expect you to work around them.

Now this is enjoying reading.Love the pictures, and can't get over you saying you hardely know the trailer is behind you. Years ago I camped and all I did was spread a tarp from the bike top to the ground.Never did remember seeing some one pull a trailer ever.I went with the wife the other night out for a 55 mile ride, all we came across the road was a turtle.Got home and my bike looked like I hit every bug in the country. Todd I love the camp fire you have there, I see the tent is getting full use, that's great man..This is what camping is all about and [sharing] it will encourage other's to do the same, whether you use a tent or a tent trailer, makes no matter as long as you are out camping and enjoying yourself is what counts.. Seeing something new is what I enjoy... :D It sounds like you are getting a lot of that in...cool.. :D

I have found that the bearsare smart, when they see you they run off the road, liberal use of the horn seems to make them run just a little faster, Moose just dont care who or what you are, they move when they want to . Deer are just stupid but they dont like the UFO sound of the Dunlop E3's and it seems to spook them back into the bush when you lean it over and jump on the brakes and the tires sing their song. The beaver was on a mission to cross over and get back into the water, he wouldnt pause for pictures, just to shy I guess.

Taken on the Icefeild Parkway between Banff and Jasper Alberta. (Its not all snow and ice) These are some impressive mountains

More big rocks
More big rocks

This next one is self explanitory

Thats it for today, stay tuned for more later, Todd

Congratulations on taking a ride many people dream of and few actually take the time to do.You are doing what the bike, trailer, and countryside are ment for, enjoy each others company. I would like to make the "Superior" tour, starting from the U.P. of Michigan travel the complete diameter of Lake Superior. Maybe, someday.
