Ideas for a trip to New Zealand

Postby albertagrown2000 » Mon Feb 16, 2015 11:46 am

Hello David.
My name is Dale.
We are planning a future trip to New Zealand, probably fall of 2016. We are from Alberta, Canada so this will be a very large undertaking for us.
I have searched online for chapter A new Zealand but actually came up empty.
What we are currently looking at is renting a bike (possibly purchasing, depending on length of time we decide to stay) and touring New Zealand. We are interested in climate, probably October-November. We are interested in meeting contacts that may be able to take us on a ride or show us the way to something "must see" that may not be listed in travel mags, etc. Places to stay.
Looking forward to hearing back from you.

Dale and Donnelly Hort

That's too bad our dates wont be closer together. We are using air miles to go so must go before December 2016.
Have not yet done a lot of research but one thing I found is that there are two glaciers in the world the average Joe can walk on. We have the privilege of having one in our back yard. It is awesome and I have been on it at least a dozen times. The other is in New Zealand. Go figure.

Yes my wife has already started searching for rentals. Not sure yet if we will spend any time in Australia but if we do the rental company in Brisbane is Gasoline Alley Harley Davidson. We are planning it as our first big trip after retirement.

Kia Ora from New Zealand. Hello to you both. I am David Bailey and I live in Christchurch, New Zealand. I ride a1998 GL1500SE. Nice to see that you both are planning a trip downunder to New Zealand. Before I was in the retail job I am in now I was a Motorcycle Tour Guide from 1995 til 2001. The longest tour was 21 days on the road I use to take overseas bikers on tours all around New Zealand.

I know of no Goldwing hire places in New Zealand but yes there is one in Australia. Please feel free to contact me for any info you need for your trip. There are lots of motorcycle Tour places here in New Zealand. That you can hire a bike and do your own thing or do a tour with them. Ride Safe Always

So are you a member of the New Zealand GWRRA?
We honestly think it will be cheaper in the long run to purchase something to ride and just have it resold for us after we leave.

Yes the GWRRA have a chapter here in New Zealand. You could try e-mailing motorcycle shops closer to your trip asking about if they do " Buy Back " It is a plan where you buy a bike from them and if you bring it back undamaged, clean they will buy it back from you for a price you have pre arranged when you brought it. That will in the end be cheaper then if you did a rental :D that's just an idea

It is time to start planning that trip I think. October is after all only 9 months away. We have seriously considered the buy and sell back option but are not finding much on line from dealers who offer this service.
