hwy 17 in florida

Postby a@r » Mon Feb 23, 2015 9:02 pm

Can any of you Florida riders tell me how well US 17 is from orange city to Jacksonville. I will be leaving orange city on a sunday morning after the Daytona 200 race Saturday. really don't want to get in the hassle on I95. I noticed that 17 goes up to 295 loop around Jacksonville. From there I have no choice but I 95 north(to make up some time) back to North Carolina. Thanks for any help you may have.

I am not looking for directions for hwy 17 just wanted to know what the road is like. 2 lane 4 lane, construction, crowded that sort of thing. My son-in law is riding with me this year to Daytona and this will be his first long trip. I was thinking this might be a good road to ride sunday morning coming back home.

every day of the week is bad up in that area but if your leaving early on a Sunday morning, (8-9am) I95 shouldn't be bad. I did that trip up to Greenville on a Sunday via I95 in Jacksonville loop area in a 26' rental truck, and other than road construction making the lanes a little narrower, it wasn't a bad run. this was back in July of '14.

thanks for the reply stuart I am sure i95 will be like that I was more concerned of hwy 17 from orange city to Jacksonville. it runs right up the middle of florida and I thought it might be a good scenic ride until the hustle of i95

Call FHP, they can tell you if there is any issues with the road. I have been up it, but its been years. It was and I suspect still is a 2 lane highway. It goes up thru the Lake George conservation area and is quite scenic.
