seeking advice, eastern NY & PA

Postby seattleboatguy » Fri Apr 03, 2015 12:44 pm

I'm planning a nice long ride this summer, and I need some help with the final phase of the trip. I'll be running east across northern New York State on highway 20. At some point, I'll need to turn south and head for Norfolk, VA. How would you suggest getting there from highway 20? I prefer to avoid big cities and the interstates whenever possible. Thanks!

Sounds like a great Ride! I live in Eastern PA. I am unsure of your NY portion, But for the PA section I would recommend taking 390 off of Rte 20 in NY and heading South for Rte 15! This is scenic, no interstate, some big towns, but spread out to where you may want them by then!. This will also take you past Harrisburg, & into MD. I hope this helps get you there. Looking to hear how it went.

Good Riding

You are not the first person to recommend Rte 15. Sounds like a highway worthy of a visit. Thanks for the input.

Rt 15 has some very scenic parts. There are also some covered bridges not too far into Va. off of Rt.15. there is a short loop that hits three or four of them. I'll try to find the route I took last year and send you a pm. Instead of taking 390 south, take a look at Rt.14. Very nice hilly ride, lots of wineries, and a great view of the lake and takes you through Watkins Glen.

I've found and used several sites that are great for planning road trips.

Some that are straight up planners:
Motorcycle Roads http://www.motorcycleroads.com/
Moto Where http://www.motowhere.com/
Sunday Morning Rides http://www.sundaymorningrides.com/
H-D Ride Planner (still good even though HD) http://www.harley-davidson.com/content/h-d/en_US/home/owners/plan-your-ride/hd-ride-planner-overview.html
Best Biking Roads (International) http://www.bestbikingroads.com/
Open Roads Journey http://www.openroadjourney.com/rides-and-roads

Some that are a little different:
Riding Social http://ridingsocial.com/
Motorcycle Tours http://www.motorcycletours.com/
Edelweiss Bike Tours http://www.edelweissbike.com/

There are also some phone apps for spur of the moment planning (no links, you'll have to search the stores yourself):
I just searched "motorcycle ride planner" and found several.
It's never too late to have a happy childhood!

The side trip off of rt 15 includes three covered bridges, all in Frederick County. It's about a 35 mile loop and you can hit the bridges at Utica Mills, Roddy Road, and Loys Station. There's also the Sachs Covered Bridge near Gettysberg, that was used by both the North and South during the civil war.

A total different approach might be to go to the southeastern corned of PA, cut through MD on rt 213 and then head to Dover, DL and pick up RT 13 south into VA and this way you could go across/through the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. There is a fee for this bridge! And it drops you right in the Hampton Roads area.

Another advantage to this route is you would be close to the Atlantic Coast and could visit beaches at Rehobeth, Ocean City and my favorite Chincoteague, VA.

Or as an alternate you could visit Norfolk by Rt 15 and take RT 17 from their intersection down to the Norfolk area and then on the return trip go up to Ocean City by Rt 13 and then follow RT 50 west to a point near your home. This Rt50 has also be used by some to go from the Atlantic to the Pacific on one road. It is a really nice road through West VA.
