2016 Planned Rides and Trips

Postby nitefuzz » Thu Feb 18, 2016 5:46 pm

Well we sat down the other day and planned a couple trips to ride for this year. Our first trip will be the end of May, riding up to northern Michigan for a ride through the tunnel of trees and supper at the Leggs Inn restaurant, and then a couple days of exploring the area and the all of the wonderful scenery, up across the Mackinaw Bridge for a day. The next planned trip is the week of 4th of July ridding down to Brown County, Indiana and ride every road we can find for a week, staying in a cabin off the beaten trail. One more trip in August will take us to Pennsylvania's north and central area in the Allegheny National Forest for another week of great ridding.

Where is everyone else going this year.

Due to unforeseen circumstances our trips this year will be shorter than normal. So far we ere planning on riding down through Texas to Big Bend National Park for a couple of days camping under the stars.

Make sure you take the road down into the valley on the backside (east) of Monroe Reservoir to go the Story... it's probably the most toured and scenic motorcycle ride in southern Indiana. BTW Kokomo rider here...

Nothing major this year .... just a couple of 'short hauls' to various Camp Outs

In early June, a trip down to Willville, at Meadows of the Dan, VA for the NAGF 2nd Spring Blue Ridge M&G, then on to Hunt's in Tellico Plains, TN for the Cherohala Chill out the following weekend, with a ride down to Atlanta to visit with a friend before returning home.

At the end of July/beginning of Aug (holiday long weekend for us Canadians) my riding group is holding it's annually Rally which is just 2 1/2 hr ride away, so I'll be dragging my Aspen Camper to that.

In Aug, a run up to northern MI for the Michigan North Woods Camp Out held at Cycle Moore, near Interlochen.

In Sept, things pick up a bit with the 4th Annual NW PA M&G at Loleta Rec Area, south of Marienville, PA (southern Alleghenies), then run over to Clinton SP in IL, for the 4th Annual NAGF Illinois M&G, followed by the 2nd Annual MO Campfire Camp Out, near Steelville, MO, before returning home.

That's all I have planned for this year at this point and time.

I'm planning a trip from southwestern Montana down to Laughlin Nevada in late April or early May. My wife is pregnant and this will be our last big trip before the baby gets here. Anyone who would like to come along is welcome, looking for riding buddies.

Last year did not see much riding but right now am planning a trip in early June to West Jefferson, NC to ride with a group of CBX folks. There will probably be more tire kicking than riding.

And I am hoping to ride out to the Hocking Hills area of Ohio the first part of August to meet with a group of old friends, eat too much, and ride a lot of the local roads. The good part is we get to got through wild West VA both ways so have to plan two different routes---perhaps Rt 250 for the trip west and Rt 33 for the trip back east.

I was looking at Daytona---I would love to see that race one more time. I was actually thinking about the wife and I driving down till I checked the motel prices. WOW 200 to 300 per room.

Pretty cool to see what others are planning to do!! My trip plan so far for this year is riding from Wichita, KS to Norfolk, VA, then up the coast to Maine, coming back down along the northern border to Niagra Falls, crossing through Ontario to pop in to see my Dad in eastern Michigan, then winding back to Wichita somehow.

Got the go-ahead from the wife last month for a camping ride to Canada/Alaska beginning late May. Since then, I've bought The Milepost, loaded campground POI's onto the GPS, been reading all related forums and blogs, etc... Now my head is spinning! NO MORE PLANNING!

I've decided to make sure the 'Wing is mechanically sound, with new tires, and then I'll just load up and take off. The plan is for at least 30 days, and I can stretch it to 60 days if needed (gotta love retirement!) I have my bucket list of "must-sees," but beyond that, the plan is to rely on instinct and recommendations of locals/other riders as to where to go and what to see.

Just wondering if any others have tried this method?

Air Canada has a deal where they fly your bike and you to a North American location, we are planning flying from Toronto Ontario to Calgary Alberta then ride down through Idaho, Oregon to the California west coast, down to San Diego then back via route 66 to Detroit and home.

I want to drive through one of those big California Redwoods!

We have a month long trip down Rt 66 planned for September with my sister and brother in law. We were going to go in 2015 but got my knee replaced and put the trip off to this year so I could enjoy it more. We will start just south of Chicago and go as far as at least the Grand Canyon. Wish we could go all the way to CA but unfortunately time and funds don't allow for that. Can't wait to see all the sites and hit the road. We will do some shorter weekend trips throughout the summer and in May we will spend a week riding down around Gatlinburg.

Got the bike out of storage today. I'm wanting to get out of town toward the end of April or being of May. Can't decide if I want to head to Laughlin, NV or South Dakota.

I was doing the RFTW Southern route (Rancho Cucamunga to D.C.) this year with a leasurly 3 week trip back to California, but life has gotten in the way. For all you veterans first off, thank you for your service. The RFTW is a must do both as a veteran and a biker. Going to the wall on this trip is not a weekend bike ride or a leasurly trip across a few states. It is an actual mission. And a rewarding one at that. For all you non-veterans but true Patriots, thank you for your Patriotisim. You too should take this trip. Maybe I'll see some of you in 2017.

The Western Loop

Postby hansklein » Wed Mar 02, 2016 9:00 pm

3 of us will make the "Western Loop" as I like to call it: CA to AZ, then North across UT, into ID, then OR, and back to CA.
We'll leave Jun 6th, and will take 2 weeks. Hope that'll be enough time for keep the days at 150-350 miles, with time to see scenery, parks, monuments, etc.

If anybody has input on what not to miss along the way, please let me know. Here is a link to the tour, there are some highlights marked.

Well, this Summer I'm going to try again at a Lake Michigan "Lake Loop Trip" that failed so miserably last Summer. (Lost my wallet after my first stop)

I'll be riding from the SW corner of Chicago north to Manitowac, WI. From there I'll be taking the SS Badger (http://www.ssbadger.com/) across the lake to Ludington, MI. Then heading north up the east side of the lake up to Mackinaw City, across the bridge and over the top of the lake. Then around and down, weaving my way back home. On the way up from Ludington, I plan to check out a nice 7 mile scenic loop through the forest near Sleeping Bear Dunes, just east of Glen Lake. It's called "Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive" It's only a 7 mile loop but it's one way traffic so you can enjoy the ride without worrying about oncoming vehicles and who's to say that you can make the loop 2 or 3 times. :O)

Sounds like some wonderful trips are planned for this year. I had two trips planned but one seems to be sinking fast.
I wanted to ride out to California, turn right and go maybe as far north as Washington. Then to Idaho, visit some relatives, then back to NW Arkansas.
I bought a Goldwing last November to make this trip but I've spent so much getting it in good reliable condition, may have to wait until next year.
Next month I'm planning a short little trip to New Mexico and back. My ex-boss wants to go to Madrid and see "Maggies Diner" from the Wild Hogs movie. Yeah, he rides a Heritage Softail.
I also want to go to the GoldwingDocs meet, if that's not too far away and a meeting place is decided upon.
And I'll do a lot of riding right around here in these corners of Arkansas, Missouri, Oklahoma and Kansas. :D

Hey DingDong, when are you going camping under the stars at Big Bend?
Saw the photo you posted, then I looked up some more of my own.
Sent them to my ex-boss and now we're planning on leaving here on April 10th for Big Bend. Will take a couple two or three days to get there. We may go ride the Three Twisted Sisters in the hill country first. :D
I rode the sisters last year on my Shadow. It does have some vicious curves.
Anyhow, there's supposed to be a motel on the west side of the park and Jerry wants to stay there at least one night.
So if you're gonna be down there during that time period, I'll be on a red 1500 SE and Jerry rides a black Harley Heritage Softail. Stop and say hi. :D

For my wife and I and another couple, we have a bucket list trip planned this year. We all have a month holiday planned in August and September to see Newfoundland and The Maritimes. As we all live in British Columbia on the far left coast of Canada, this trip has been in the planning for sometime. Our plan is to ship our GL1800's with cargo trailers on Air Canada from Vancouver, B.C. to Montreal, QC and then ride to Newfoundland and then back to ride The Maritimes. Then are epic ride back across Eastern Canada and down to the United States for our return trip to Vancouver. I've been in contact with a few GWRRA Chapters in both Newfoundland and The Maritimes and every person who's replied has said they'd love to show us around their part of heaven. For those of you wondering the air freight with Air Canada is not as expensive as I thought it would be. You see for the past two years Air Canada has offered a, "Fly My Bike", program and to ship our Gold Wing from Vancouver to Montreal is only $650 Can and $99 for a dangerous cargo certificate and a few taxes for a total of about $850 Can. Now there will be a few hundred dollars more for our trailers, but believe me that's cheaper than most trucking companies and the bike get there in one day not a week or more. For more information check it out at, https://www.aircanada.com/cargo/shared/ ... 2012:42:19

I was in Newfoundland once. Not for very long but the main thing I remember was how nice the people were.
Hope all four of you have a wonderful, trouble-free holiday and you take lots of photos. :D

Planning to ride the loop around Lake Superior in June/July this year. Any good sites, watering holes, or hotels recommended? Looking at about a 10 day ride.
