Wing Ding 38 via Alaska

Postby cal3san » Mon Jul 04, 2016 7:01 pm

I'm getting serious about my upcoming Wing Ding 38 trip. Will be leaving 19 July and go via Fairbanks, Alaska with scheduled stops in Boone, NC; Nancy and Hopkinsville, KY; and Portland, OR before heading up to Fairbanks. Will spend a week or two in Fairbanks/Anchorage areas before heading to Billings via Edmonton and Calgary.

Got my Milepost plus Alaskan Camping book as well as planned route from GWRRA Rescue Plus Map Service; not to mention I have some Butler Maps and have entered the entire trip into my TomTom Motorcycle GPS. Cashed in a fistful of credit card points for gas cards plus have some Cracker Barrel and Outback cards left from a previous card's reward program. Hey that's almost $600.00 I don't have to worry about.

Took the Wise Foods Emergency Food Packets I got at Christmas and broke them down into manageable portions and airtight-sealed them with the food saver. Also tossed in the 10 MREs I have left over from Hurricane Irene. (They were compliments of the local Disaster Recovery Program.) Folding 2 burner Coleman will do the lion's share of cooking but I will also have my Jet Boil for quick hot water for coffee and grits in the AM.

Sleeping bag with extra covers will be enough for me on this trip but just in case it does get really cold I could pull into a CG with electricity and plug in my electric foot warmer (half blanket) or just toss a chemical foot warmer packet in the bottom or the bag 30 minutes before sleepy time.

Emergency wise I'm packing a spare front tire, oil change kit and 3 Rotopax fuel cans that'll give me 4 gallons of extra fuel for those long stretches in the PNW and Canada as well as the usual flat tire fixes and miscellaneous small tools. (I love the Rotopax cans since they are flat and hug the roof of the Slipstream camping trailer). Have downloaded and installed the SpotWalla and Blubber GPS so friends and GF can track me. Also packing my heated riding gear "just in case." Better to have it than need it and end up calling myself some awful names.

Thanks to all who have made the trip in the past as I have read your reports and "taken a lil' bit here and there" to improve my program. And if anyone thinks I've missed anything, plus chime in. Ditto for anyone who has a desire to ride any or all stretches of this fabulous trip.

sounds like a great trip, which way have you decided upon for your trip up, are you taking Hwy 97 through BC or Hwy 97 to Prince George then Hwy 16 West and up Hwy 37 to Watson Lk. Don't forget to stop at Laird for the enjoyment of the hot springs you will really apprieciate soaking in the pools that are available. My wife and I are also attending Wing Ding 38 (our first) May see you there, take good care.

Will definitely give you a shout out if I do. Isn't Red Deer where a Canadian GW Rally is going held.

At the moment I'm sweltering in 100 F (110 Heat Index) in Omaha, Nebraska. Headed west to Portland, Oregon (if I don't melt first) up.

I may be there for it but for the time being I'm in Whitehorse waiting for a starter for the trike. Been here a week and hopefully it will arrive this weekend or Monday. Think the delay is going to cut outs the Fairbanks part of the trip but will still have time to see Skagway before heading back in time for WD38.
