California to Minnesota...what should I see?

Postby cardinal » Fri Aug 12, 2016 12:03 pm

Planning a trip from Fresno Ca. to Luverne Minnesota Sept 18 to Oct 1. First night out will get us to Elko Nv. then up into Idaho. Don't want to go through Yellowstone and don't want to end up in Jackson, or even the Jackson Hole area overnight, Super 8 motel is over $200 in that area :o !!
We want to see Mt. Rushmore and maybe Little Bighorn.
Any thing jump to mind that we should see........or avoid?

I would stop at the Grand Canyon and take the road thru Rocky Mountain National park that goes thru Estes Park CO. I'd also stop at the Crazy Horse monument.

I don't think we'll make it far enough south to visit the Grand Canyon, but Estes Park in Colorado is possible on the way back. I've never been in that part of Colorado.
Maybe the Crazy Horse monument on the way to Luverne.
Thanks for the suggetions..

Getting down to the wire and have a probable route.
Day one Fresno to Elko, 8 hours, 560 miles.

Day two-Elko to Alpine Wyoming, 6 hours, 395 miles.

Day Three Alpine, WY to Cody, WY. 5 hours, 218 miles
Tour Jackson, Jackson Hole, Teton Park and traverse Yellowstone

Day Four-Cody Wy to Bel Fourche, SD. 6 hours, 365 miles
Tour Little Bighorn Battle Field

Day five- Bel Fourche, SD to Wall, SD. 3.5 hours, 167 miles
Tour Sturgis, Deadwood, Mt. Rushmore and Wall.
This way if anybody ever asks me if I've been to Sturgis I can say "DAMN RIGHT!!"

Day 6- Wall, SD to Luverne, MN. 4.5 hours, 315 miles
Probably check out the Corn Palace in Mitchell, SD., just so I can say "DAMN RIGHT! I'VE BEEN TO THE CORN PALACE!!"

Haven't a clue as to what route we'll take to get back home yet.....but it'll probably involve Nebraska, Colorado, Utah and Nevada with a lot more time on Freeways than I like.
I'll try to post up something while we're on the road.......but I tend to get lazy.... so it'll probably be after we get back.
Ride on........and stay safe

Forgot about Devils Tower, but that's on the list as well. Don't know if there'll be time or interest for Crazy Horse. Still planning the route back, so we'll keep in mind your Colorado suggestions.
Thanks

Between Wall Drug and the Badlands, there is an old missile silo that you can tour.
You will need tickets. Check here:

We toured one of those Silos somewhere near Tucson, AZ a couple of years ago. Very sobering.
