GoldwingsDocs Gathering Sep 22-24, 2017

Postby harvey01 » Thu Feb 16, 2017 12:48 pm

I know this was talked about back last year but was wondering if there is any interest in a gathering this year? Perhaps a time in August in the Hocking Hills of Ohio, or maybe Canaan Valley in WV. I know that Logan, Ohio is on the edge of the Hills area and has a number of motels.

Just throwing out the locations to see if there is any interest regardless of location and time. Certainly it would be cooler in September or October, but I realize some still have kids in school!

I'd love to see this happen! The Hocking Hills/Logan area is one of my favorite riding spots. We generally get a cabin for a weekend when we go down, and use that as our "home base" when riding around. There are some good campgrounds in the area, too.

There are lots of amazing caves sprinkled around the area, and some of the finest hilly, curvy biking roads you'll find anywhere. Logan has a few decent restaurants, including my favorite, Utopia, which is cheap and has some of the most amazing food.

+1 Aye vote here - if the president allows me to cross the border,

Never been to Hocking Hills, so that would be a good one. Lots of advance heads up needed to be able to reserve camping.

Ding Dong, As wingAdmin noted, the roads in that area and further east are great motorcycle roads. No they are not like the Alps, or Applachians, or the Rockies, but they are fun to ride.
There is a Baymont Inn and the Old Dutch Restaurant right there at Rt 33 to make an easy starting/base camp. As noted above there are a number of campgrounds in the area from a KOA to the Old Man.s Cave Campground in the nearby statepark.

Before plans are made we need preferable dates, what you want such as guided tours, self guided tours, bike show, and any organized dinners. I know the Old Dutch Restaurant can handle groups and I suspect several other places can also. On of the best breakfasts anywhere is at the M&M Restaurant on Main Street in Logan. They also make good lunches.

I am willing to work to make this happen but can already rule out some dates. I will be travelling from June 11 through at least July 15, 2017 and again August 26th to September 10th. Other than that I am pretty open.

If you want to do this provide some ideas and suggestions.

This is a very short list of stuff available:
Hocking Hills State Park
Rock House
Columbus Washboard(This is a really neat tour frequently done by the British owner who also teaches you to play a washboard)
Cedar Falls Trail and Hiking
Zipline and Aerial Adventure Parks
Cantwell Cliffs
Paul Johnson Pencil Museum
Lake Hope State Park
Hocking Hills Winery
Hocking Hills Moonshine
Logan Antique Mall
Lake Logan and the State Park
Hocking Hill Scenic Railway

I am sure many can add stuff to the list. What is not listed is some excellent roads to ride. The triple nickel(RT 555) is well known among locals and has been enjoyed by many of us not from that area. Challenging roads are all over the area!

How about something in mid to late September to avoid the heat of summer!

Good riding roads and getting to meet good folks is pretty much my bucket list on these types of things. I am pretty simple to get along with. Wonder how many others might feel the same way. There might not be a requirement to plan a bunch of entertaining stuff.

I've been to a few m&g that other Goldwing forums have had, I even met ADM at wing ding in fort wayne. other than a hello we didn't talk cause it was the last day and I wanted to see what wing ding was all about. GWOF had a nice gathering in cody, wy. a few years ago but I passed on it to buy the mighty ST 1300
make a plan and set a date and don't worry about who can and can't make it, you'll never have a date that everyone can make

Let's start tentatively thinking about late August or early September then. Perhaps over the labor day long weekend, which is the first weekend in September? Thoughts anyone?

This is me following behind Mrs. Wingadmin through the wonderful twisty roads of Hocking Hills a few years back:

As was just pointed out to me, that weekend is the end of Wing Ding, so not the best choice.

Perhaps one or two weeks following that? The heat should be dissipating by then, and riding should be quite pleasant.

Latter September is my vote, maybe try and get in tune with fall colors?? Maybe still too early for full fall color but hey I (we) could just keep circling the lakes!!

I'll go if it doesn't conflict with a couple other rides I have planned. Last time I went to Hocking Hills I had a hard time finding a hotel with a vacancy. Not too many in the area. Might be a couple other wings and bikes that could come with me from Pittsburgh.

Zk

ps. colder weather is ok with me :)

There's a good chance I can make this. Won't know for sure until that time is nearererer.
Will be camping, Wing & trailer.

I have 2 spare tents, 9x9 one room, one door. 2 room cabin style 9x16 (size approx). Both are 7' standable. Tents COULD BE for sale if I get my trailer completed.

I'm in. Rode the 555 a couple of years ago and that was fun, but I believe I'd like this area better. Any time is good for me.

I am a new GoldWing owner (around 7 months, 2003 GL1800). I sometimes ride from Fayetteville, NC to Myrtle Beach. But riding to Ohio sound like a challenge. Please keep writing articles concerning the dates and locations if Ohio changes.

Regards,
Walter

Love the idea - Love the location
In fact I think so much if the area I am going to an event there in July -

The Traveling Picnic is in Chillicothe - Not far from all of the stuff mentioned here ..
http://www.travelingpicnic.com/index.htm
I am one of the folks who organize the Picnic event

We are staying at the Chistopher Inn
https://www.christopherhotels.com/christopher-inn/

I checked a few hotels while visiting there and this place is really awesome -

Maybe a block of rooms could be arranged for whatever date the gang here picks .

I would love to go back in early fall ;)

This is a thing ! IF this is going to happen SOMEONE will have to set up a block of rooms and take point on this NOW.
Planning is already nearly too late for September (fall colors) so if this is going to come together a volunteer to lead will be needed.

Sounds good to me. I have never been to Hocking Hills so it would be a new adventure.
