How many bikes have you owned?

Post by Sidcar » Sun Nov 23, 2014 9:13 am

Wingman listing his bikes set me off down, a long way down, Memory Lane thinking of the bikes I have owned in the past and I ended up trying to list them all.
My first bike back, in 1966, was a 1959 Triumph Tiger Cub. That made way for a 250cc Norton Jubilee, aweful machine, quickly dumped for a 1960 500cc Triumph T100A that made way for 1963 Triumph Bonneville. That took care of my first 12 months of biking. After that, in no particular order and as I remember them, there was:
1954 BSA Golden Flash with a Rankin double adult sidecar ( that gave me the sidecar bug), Norton ES2, Ariel VB a 500cc side valve slogger, 2 BSA Bantams, Honda 50, Velocette 500cc MSS, Ducati 450 Desmo, 1926 500cc Royal Enfield, 1929 BSA sv 500cc Sloper, 1946 350cc Ariel, BSA DBD34 Gold Star, 998cc BSA G14, 1930 BSA Sloper 500cc oho and launch type sidecar, Moto Guzzi Falcone, Honda Goldwing GL 1500. The T100A I owned three times and the engine out the Bonneville was fitted into a BSA A10 frame to make a Tribsa then taken out of the Tribsa and fitted into Rickman Metisse frame kit. It made a nice looking bike but the brackets on the frame to support the silencers used break off due to the engine vibration.
Throw in a couple of racing sidecar outfits and I think that's about it.
Some of the above I really regret selling, and others I was glad to see the back of.

Sid

Uhhh, memory don't fail me now....and in order....
- 85 Honda Shadow 700 (Candy Apple Red), loved that bike
- 85 Honda Shadow 500 (bought for my wife to learn to ride on)
- 82 Yamaha Venture 1200, sucker would run like a "bat outa hell", and really smooth, but my knees would hurt cuz I could not stretch
- 82 Goldwing 1100, silver - it was a lowered one, my wife was moving up so we were shopping, I road it for a year first before she got it
- 89 Goldwing 1500, champagne/beige/what ever it is, looks like my current bike now, great bike but it had vapor lock, had to fix a bit
- sold everything when I moved up to the NW, terrible riding seasons from what I was used to.
- 96 1500 Vulcan 88 (I think it was a 96...), a crazy vtwin thumper, rattled and shook, and was smooth on the highway, bright yellow, but time to move up again.
- 88 Goldwing 1500 - Current ride, glad I am back

I started riding late and have only been riding for 8 years. In that time I have owned 4 bikes:
  1. 1. 1982 GL1100 Interstate - First Bike. I found this reallly big to learn on so I bought my next bike,
    2. 1999 Suzuki SV650S - Great little bike. Sounded awesome and went like crazy. Had I been young this bike could have killed me.
    3. 1983 GL1100 Aspencade - The SV and 82 GL were sold to buy this. I loved this bike. The change in the gearing made this a much more comfortable bike on the highway. My wife secretly sold this bike to my father so she so could by me bike #4
    4. 1990 GL1500 SE - This is quickly taking over as my favourite bike. I expect that unless I fall into some money or find a newer 1500 at a really good price this bike will be with me for a long, long time, and I am quite happy about that.

I just copied and pasted my signature from another forum, out of this collection I can hop on the Star, both Gl1500 bikes, the 85 GL1200 the Virago one 85 Vmax one 85 Venture and the 89 Venture and both CX bikes, a couple more do run but are in stages of restoration. My number one bike is the 89 Venture Royale and then the 85 Vmax followed by either Gl1500 Goldwings. Though the 93 is being heavier modified right now in the project room. It's a tribute bike, has a touchscreen radio I just put in two days ago. These are what I own right now, only bike I let go was a Kawasaki KZ1000.

Wow, that's some impressive lists!
I started with a CX-500C in 1991. A year later after an accident (the bike was badly hurt, I wasn't) I bought a '76 GL1000, initially just to ride it while I fixed up the CX. I loved it and kept riding it for years. Eventually after a few years neglecting the bike for various reasons I sold it and bought a '84 naked GL1200. Within a year I hated the handling of the thing so I got another GL1000, a '77 this time. For commuting into town I now have a Honda Forza 250 scooter.
Along the way I also owned a German Triumph for a while (the only non-Honda I've had) but never had the time to restore it so that was sold after a few years, still as a project bike.
So my current collection:
1977 GL1000
1984 GL1200 (naked)
NSS-250 Forza scooter.

I'm equally brand-loyal with cars; all my cars apart from the first one have been Volvo's but there's another forum for that ;-)

Let's see - I'm going to have to dig deep through my memory for this -

- 1959 (?) Triumph - A real POS, but my first bike
- 1969 Honda 90 - First new bike - lotta fun!
- 19?? Yamaha 175 enduro - Took my lumps on this one
- 19?? Husky 250 - FAST, but engine kept seizing up
- 19?? Honda CB350 - Another new bike
- 19?? Honda CB450 - Great little bike. Rode this one all over the place.
- 197? Triumph 650 - Didn't learn my lesson from the first one, so I bought another.
- 197? Honda 750 - One of the first 4-cylinder Hondas. Great bike!
- 1977 Honda 750A - Bought this one new and STILL HAVE IT! Saving it for my grandson.
- 19?? Honda 650 - Little twin (can't remember the name) water-cooled. Nice bike.
- 19?? Kawasaki Ninja 750 - A little rocket ship!
- 1991 Honda CBR1000 - Very fast. Decided to sell it before I killed myself.
- 1993 Honda GL1500 - Still have this one - great bike!!
- 2012 Harley Dyna - Lots of fun, but a little small
- 2013 Harley Heritage Softail - Still have - great bike around town

There are probably a couple of others that I can't pull out of my memory. The three that I still have make for a nice combination - the Goldwing for touring, the Harley for putting around town and looking cool, and the 750A to remind me of my bike roots. Life is good!

OK, so I started off with a Motobecan Moped (50cc, thought I was in Heaven!), that lead to a 72 Honda CL100 (doubling the engine, thought I was on a hot-rod!), then moved up to a "real" bike: 1982(?) Honda CM450. Wow, what power! I was stylin', except my biking older brother gave me crap for the automatic transmission (a girlie bike, you know), then a Yamaha 850 Triple (best touring bike I'd owned, except the saddle hurt the butt..Alaska leather solved that), now the '82 GL1100, SWEET BIKE! I've come a long ways from the Moped days, though I wish I still had it.

1966 BSA

2009 Honda Goldwing GL1800

Over 800,000 miles ridden. Longest trip = 132,000 miles in just under 13 months. Still crazy after all these years.

My unimpressive list:
New 1965 Honda Benley touring-stolen
New 1973 Kawasaki Z903- scary fast and loose-also stolen, but had ins. this time.
Used 1975 Z903 W/flat rear tire, scared prev owner so bad had to sell, $1600 less than 2500 miles. Sold in '78due to back inj.

I started out with a 60's model Cushman when I was a kid. At forteen my older brother gave me his Honda XL 100. I drove it until I was 16 and run a paper route on it for two years. 13 years ago I was given a '71 Norton Commando basket case but it was all there. I spent the next nine years and $14,000 totally restoring it. I finished it in May 2010. Year and a half ago I purchased a 98 GL 1500 Aspencade at an estate sale. I can't get the wife to get on the Norton anymore. I ride the Norton when I am solo. The Goldwing is the choice of steed when the wife wants to ride.

Enjoyed reading, but your post just screams "pictures of the Norton", one of my lust after bikes in the '60s, along with the Triumph and the BSA twins.

74 Yamaha RD350 (traded for 78)
78 Yamaha XS750 (sold around 86)
81 Yamaha XS1100H Venture (parked around 86, donated to HS in 05)
88 Honda GL1500 Goldwing (Purchased 7/14)

1986 happened to be the year our fouth child was born. 2005 he graduated HS.

We did most of our road trips on the XS750. Neither grandma would volunteer after the fourth kid.
We now plan to make up for the lost time. (In biking that is. We traveled by RV when the kids were smaller.)
