VTX-1800 tech assist, won't start

Post by Earl43P » Thu May 28, 2015 12:39 pm

I met a retiree (68) that has a VTX-1800 that won't start, so I offered to help him get it running (no $ charge).

His story is, he rides it like a fool and has "wrecked it" several times.
He wants to ride it a few more times, then sell it. (Knows he won't get squat for it if it won't start/run/ride/stop.)
The last wreck was a skid lay down into a ditch, with only cosmetic damage, last summer.
He rode it home from the scene, then took the car to the Dr. office, not the hospital.

It has been garaged since BUT he also removed the DynaJet Ignition system and reverted it back to stock.
It still won't start. Battery is on a tender. Cranks fast. Smells fuel in exhaust vapor.

My initial assumption is bad gas or water in the ethanol gas, so I plan to drain the tank.
Sounds simple enough until you factor in "I know NOTHING about a VTX and Fuel Injected Hondas".
Regardless, I committed to this assist and will follow through.

How should I drain the old gas, including whatever is "in the lines" to the injectors? I'm hoping the fuel pump will pump it out.

Obviously, I will be checking for spark/fuses. I'll pull the headlamp fuses to save on the battery, but I have jumper cables and know to use a non-running power donor.

He claims that when he removed the aftermarket ignition, all the connectors got plugged back to the stock stuff. I will be inspecting all that based on whether there is spark or not.

He isn't in any hurry, which is good because I can't get to it until late June / early July anyway. I have some projects and travels in the way until then. So, if you have any suggestions / VTX-1800 experience / ideas / smart-aleck remarks, feel free to post away! I'll update this when I speak to him next and/or get to his garage to check it out. (I have NO interest in obtaining this bike whatsoever, just helping out a fellow Fleet Reserve Assn member).

You probably already know this, but I would double check every wire change he made and maybe some he doesn't admit to. I cannot tell you how many times I have gone behind someone who swears the wiring is correct that the changed or checked, only to find it wrong on at least one wire. So, I would say start there. Good luck.

To drain the fuel tank have a short piece of garden hose and a container handy, pull the fuel pipe off the tank...left hand side..and shove the larger bore garden hose on quickly to drain it into the container.Depending on the year of the bike the fuel pump will either be inside the tank or at the front of the back wheel...I use bareass choppers for any info I need on my VTX1800C...try here

Bringing this back to the top, because I hate it when we don't know the "Rest of the Story". Maybe he will finish the post!

I tried calling him several times way back then and left voicemails; he never replied.
Talked to a member that knows him that said he got help putting it on a trailer and took it to Honda.

Months later, he sold it for a song. I never saw the bike but it had "cosmetic issues".
I also completely forgot about this thread, my apologies.

Since my 93 has had zero real problems, I was not active here like I was on NGWClub and ValkyrieRiders (and now ST-Owners).
Tires, brake pads, some lamps and a battery along with oil and filter changes are basically all it has needed in the two years and 49000 miles I've had it.....until I stripped the oil drain plug - and I'M BAAAACK. LOL

I did have a headlamp relay(s) issues with water intrusion but I potted the cheap Chinese relays with RTV and they last WAY more than five rainstorms now. <That PO's headlamp wiring was not OEM, but works, with heavier gage wire.
