With winter approaching in a few months I am considering purchasing a 1978 kawasaki kz400 de luxe with plans to restore. How difficult would it be to find parts for this bike? I don't want to get in over my head.

With various ungrades and changes this model had a run of 10 years, so you shouldn't find it too difficult to get spares. There's a good website dedicated to this bike:
http://www.kz400.com/
'Impossible' is just a level of difficulty! The only stupid question is the one you didn't ask first!

( Seriously, you haven't read all 115 pages of my http://www.wingovations.com website ?? )

I had a Kawasaki A1 (250cc) for a short time in '70 until I upgraded to the Honda CB350.

I am constantly amazed at how much information is available over the internet.
Just like those here still running their '75 Wings, you will always find a group of like minded people.

Good luck with your plans, looks like fun.

Looks like a fun project and probably pretty cheap to start with. Go for it and have fun, the parts will be on the internet. Part of the fun of old vehicles is finding the parts you need, its like a scavenger hunt!

You're right, sometimes part of the fun is finding parts, other times it's the misery. :D
In another post, he said that he looked at it and walked away.
I think he's getting an '81 GL1100 instead as posted here.

Resurrecting an old thread.... Mrs. Mini had a '77 KZ400 until we recently sold it. It was a fun project when I got it and over the winter restored it. Parts were readily available and by keeping it stock, it drew a crowd everytime we parked it somewhere. It seems as though everyone, or at least their buddy, had one just like it!

My CM400 is a blast to ride... It's really powerful for the light amount of weight it has... Too many folks today think a 400 is a beginner bike or think it's too little, but it is a nice ride and a welcome change from all my other much larger motorcycles...
