v-Star charging problem

Post by edgus347 » Mon Jun 20, 2016 4:43 pm

Hi, I have a 2001 Yamaha V-Star 1100. It's a good bike for riding and it looks good. Lately I've had a problem with the charging system. I replaced the stator and rectifier and I still have a problem, not getting the proper voltage to the battery. Has anyone with a V-Star had this problem ?

I had a 2001 Vstar 1100 for 14 years. Charging system is just enough to handle the addition of passing lamps before it is overloaded. Can't stress enough to have battery load tested since it is most likely culprit. A trickle charger can't initally charge a new battery or maintain a weak one.

It's rare that the stator will fail and thats only after extended use with a bad regulator. Vstar charging occurs at high rpm, 3500-5000 rpm range. Did you replace battery when regulator was replaced, if it went bad it will fry the battery, not always completely but a few cells. Bad battery will cause bike to run off charging, not enough power from stator to run bike and charge at same time. If battery is good it will run the bike and charging will maintain battery. Hook meter to battery and read it's voltage, should be 12+ volts dc. Rev engine to higher limits and read voltage, should be 13-14 volts dc. Bad regulator will show 14-18 volt dc readings.

2001 regulator was good for 30 amp and will burn out trying to maintain a weak battery. Need a good 40 or 50 amp regulator to avoid loss. I do a lot of starter clutch and charging repairs for Vstars. If you find its a bad regulator I have a new Electrosport upgrade unit left for $60, new and never used. My handle on Vstar riders forum is vstar105.
