Mine was also a Honda. A 73 CB450 twin. I didn't keep it very long however, too much buzz to ride for very long. I went for a 200 mile round trip once and couldn't wait to get off.

Very cool. In 1986 (30 years ago) I got my first bike, a '76 XL350. Me and my younger bro abused the heck out of that bike.

In 1969 I bought my first bike; a black 1966 Honda CB77 305cc Super Hawk street bike, I paid $350 for that bike. My riding buddy had a CL77. For about a year, I'd ride 100 miles each way to North Hollywood from Victorville, CA to visit family on weekends. The bike had a 3.6 gallon tank and it seems that I could never make it on one tank of gas, probably because I would get gas as soon as it went on reserve.

That was a tough little machine. At one point I ran it too long at red line, which was about 99 mph. It took it for a while but finally the left piston self destructed. When I had it torn down an repaired, it cost me $180 for new pistons, cylinder sleeves, rings, valves and seats at Victorville Honda. That was back when I was making about $100 a month in the military. The engine ran like new but I had to sell it about four months later due to a permanent change of station to South East Asia. I really loved that bike. It set me on the road to street motorcycling for the next 47 years.

I'm late to the party - my first bike was a 2003 Suzuki Burgman 400, bought in 2005. Traded it in on a new 2007 Suzuki Boulevard C50T which got sold in 2011 when I bought a 2006 Ural Tourist. The Ural just got sole because I bought this great 1994 GL1500SE!

First bike was a dark red 1980 Honda CM400T with a big sissy bar I bought from a coworker in the late 80's that needed a lot of tlc to get back on the road. Ran it a couple years until sold to another local in MD. Paid $400 for the bike and I think I sold it for the same. I remember it wasn't a pretty bike but it ran ok.

My first was a CB350G. My dad bought the same.

He did a trade in three years later for a 750 Super Sport and I traded in mine in 78 for my first Wing.

Mine was a 1959 200cc Triumph Tiger Cub, £20 from the junk room of my local dealer. I remember reaching 30 mph for the first time, it seemed like a hundred. The engine self destructed about four months later.

I love this topic, I hope it keeps going. My first bike was a Rupp Black Widow. 3 1/2HP. Straight pipe, torque converter, she was a mean machine and would blast out at 55 mph. Two of my buddies also had them and man did we have the trails. Graduated to an Indian ME 100 a few years later. Those were the days. :D

I got my first bike at age 17, because I couldn't afford a car.

As I recall, my parents said something along the lines of "no way in HELL" would I be allowed to buy a motorcycle.

So, being that I was 17, I decided that this meant I should go out and buy a motorcycle. Which I did.

I decided I didn't want to bother with a small bike to learn on that I would just sell to buy a bigger one later. That made no sense, why not just buy the bigger bike to begin with? So my very first road-going motorcycle was a 1984 750 Interceptor.

I told my parents that it was a "beginner" bike, and good to learn on.

The fact that I am still here today is a miracle. I can tell you from repeated personal experience that the 1984 750 Interceptor tops out at 150 mph.

Of course, my parents then talked to my dad's brother, who had ridden motorcycles all his life, and who dutifully informed them that no, a 750 Interceptor is NOT a "beginner" bike. My parents insisted that I sell the bike.

I dutifully put an ad in the local Cycle Trader, for about $2,000 more than the bike was worth. Strangely enough, I didn't get a whole lot of interested buyers for some reason.

My beloved Interceptor came to an ignominious end when a pick-up truck turned left in front of me, and I went over its hood, totaling the bike, and doing some fairly decent damage to my body as well.

A 1949 BMW R24, 250cc was my first in 1957. I was stationed in France in the Air Force, speedo was rusted out and it may have had original tires. Transferred to Erding Germany in November and drove it with no problems . Left it when went to Libya .

.

First bike was a 67' Honda CL77 305cc street scrambler that I bought in 68'. Standard red frame and grey body parts.

It only had a few miles on it which I soon remedied. Used to love cracking the throttle with the "snuffs" open. Can't beat that sound.

Wish I still had it.

I bought my first bike in 1977 when I was 15 with the approval of my Dad, but the very much disapproval of my Mom. (but she knew for 6 years prior this day would come)

It was a 1974 Honda CB360 with a handlebar mounted fairing in excellent condition. (thanks Dad for not letting me spend my money on the first bike I looked at)

I wish I had it today.

I am a farm boy so most of my riding consisted of miles to my small town high school. I think my Mom had heart spasms the first time I told her I was riding to the "big" city.

Rode that bike until I graduated from High School and then bought a new 1980 Honda 750K fitted with a Windjammer fairing and saddlebags. That summer my buddies and I took a 7500 mile round trip up to Vancouver Island, BC and then down through California. Of course 1980 was when the Interstate was introduced. There were already a few on the road, and every time one passed us I told myself that is my next bike.

Two years later I bought a 1982 Interstate (which I still own...somehow couldn't turn it lose) and have been riding Wings ever since.

I know many out there wish the Wings had all the latest bells and whistles.....but to me, the basic concept and dependability of the Goldwing for the last 4 decades is a great security blanket and plenty good enough for this 'ol farm boy.

I started my riding at 14 (1969) with a 1966 CT200 Trail 90 that my dad bought.
I'd tell him that I was going trail riding, but of course would get it out on the roads.
When I got to be 16 and old enough for a license, I upgraded to the CB350.
Huge change between the two.

I have to chuckle a bit on this thread. My dad's first bike was a 1983 GL1100 Interstate. Yup, he started with the big old girl that still goes strong and he has never sold it. I had many rides on the back of it before I was old enough to get my own. Owing to the fact that as a 16 year old kid and not having the money, my first bike was a Yamaha 400 Heritage Special. When I joint the military a few years later, I sold it and later bought my brothers 650 which I ran for a few years before selling it prior to my next move. Now in Ontario (aka longer riding season than northern Alberta), I went to buy a new bike. History always repeats itself and this time for the better. I purchased a trusted friend: 1983 GL1100 Interstate and am absolutely loving it rain or shine :).

My 1st bike 20 years ago at the age of 29 was a 1983 GL1100 interstate.

I purchased this after learning to ride in a parking lot across from Alcatraz in San Francisco on a hangover. I learned 3 bikes in 1 hours time.
1st bike was a vulcan 750cc with a windshield, 2nd bike was a kawasaki concours 1000cc "Connie", 3rd bike was a GL1500. The rental house was near the Fisherman's Wharf/Pier and we(3 of us all together) decided to drive down to Big Sur and then back to San Fran and then North to Napa and then back to San Fran to drop off the bikes back at the Rental Center.

Never ever before this trip did I ever ride a motorcycle, nor even had the urge to ride.

Highlight of the trip: My 1st pass on a two lane highway riding a 1000cc "Connie" I couldn't pass a garbage truck!!!

I came home and had the bug, and bought a 1983 interstate GL1100 and did many a long ride with it.

Even drove it to Phoenix in 4 days flat in January of 1998 during the ice storm, that's another story

Once you get the bug, it never dies!!

Best,

Scott
